Marvel released a new trailer for their upcoming filming, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Let’s break it down.
The trailer opens with a close up on the ten inscribed bands around a wrist. Then it shows a black flag, with the same 10-ringed symbol that we see in the very first Iron Man film. In the background, the classic Marvel villain The Mandarin speaks to his son, Shang-Chi. He says, “Throughout my life, the Ten Rings gave our family power. If you want them to be yours one day, you have to show me that you’re strong enough to carry them.”
From just one line, we see Shang-Chi’s relationship with his father. The Mandarin will push him to be stronger, or die trying. Throughout the trailer we get to see clips of the intense training that Shang-Chi went through, from fighting legions of skilled warriors to embracing the pain of a weapon’s impact. His father his a legacy. Shang-Chi is a part of the Mandarin’s legacy, and the next in line to wield the Ten Rings, but The Mandarin insists that he beĀ strongĀ enough.
His mother, on the other hand, offers him more nurturing advice. She says, “You are a product of all who came before you. The legacy of your family. You are your mother, and whether you like it or not, you are also your father.” The trailer explores the legacy of his family and the magic in his home.
