The DeLorean is coming back – to the future

The DeLorean is back, and it’s about time!

We first saw the iconic sports car-turned-time-machine three decades ago in the movie, Back to the Future. But the last time a DeLorean was built was nearly 35 years ago. Soon that will change at the DeLorean Motor Company in Humble, Texas.

Only about 9,000 DeLoreans were ever produced during the automaker’s short-lived run during the 1980s. Since that time period, DeLorean plants have been used mostly to refurbish the world-famous vehicles.

Now, current CEO Stephen Wynne plans to build 300 more of the cars that will replicate the 1982 model. The company still has the necessary parts from the time period to create the new cars.

“There’s no reason to change the appearance of the car. As we go into the program, we’ll decide what areas need to be freshened up,” Wynne said.

Currently refurbished models are available on average between $45,000 to $55,000. Wynne hopes to sell the new ones for less than $100,000, depending on the engine choices. He aims to begin selling the vehicles in 2017.
