Return to Westview: Agatha All Along Premiere Review

Double double, toil and trouble — Agatha returns with Wanda’s rubble! Well, maybe. The two-episode premiere of Marvel’s newest TV series, Agatha All Along, stokes the fires of Wanda Maximoff’s disappearance. What, you expected a clear answer from the trickiest witch around? Think again, mortal.

WandaVision first cast its spell on Marvel audiences in 2021. Three years later, the flagship TV series continues its magical legacy with Agatha Harkness. We’re dealing with the consequences of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Mysteries pop up faster than you can whisper “road trip” and everyone wants to know — who is the goth Teen?! Sit down for a spell and let’s see what truths we can decipher.

Agnes of Westview

Episode 1, titled “Seekest Thou the Road,” continues the well-loved tradition of WandaVision by mirroring the style of a specific TV genre. In this first episode, Agatha, currently called Agnes, is stuck in a true crime thriller. It’s fitting, considering an unidentified body has popped up in the woods of Westview. Agnes is an investigator on the crime scene though we never do see the victim’s face.

Later, in the morgue, a tag on the body’s foot magically shows the name Wanda Maximoff, dated October 13. But is this actually the body of the Scarlet Witch? Agnes’ investigation reveals the body likely came from somewhere outside of Westview, specifically Eastern Europe. Plus, a stolen (and burned) book from the library is an anagram for DARKHOLD. Agnes might need a little help on this tough case — fortunately, an out-of-town investigator named Rio Vidal steps in. These two women seem to have a charged history and Rio definitely knows far more than she’s letting on. It’s a lot like Agatha’s initial role with Wanda. Lots of innuendos and all-knowing smirks.

Season of the Witch

True to its titular character, the show is rife with mystical symbolism. Throughout the premiere, Agatha is plagued by animal familiars who stalk her from afar. A crow, a rat, and a wolf all appear to haunt Agatha. These omens really do seem to unsettle her. However, can you blame her? She’s a notorious power-stealer who is hated by her own community. That’s a dangerous situation to be in.

Not to mention, she is currently powerless. Wanda’s messy hex is still in place so Agatha decides to walk the Witches’ Road and restore her powers. Slowly, and especially with Rio’s influence, Agatha awakens from being Agnes. But Rio turns more friend than foe as she attacks Agatha with what appears to be an athame, a ritual knife used by witches. And Rio’s not the only witch out for revenge. The Salem Seven are hot on Agatha’s heels. What’s a powerless witch to do?

Coven of Chaos

As we move into episode 2, titled “Circle Sewn with Fate / Unlock Thy Hidden Gate,” Agatha’s mission unfolds. To successfully walk the Witches’ Road, she must assemble a group of witches to help her on the perilous journey. She has a meddling, though competent, Teen at her side but she also needs a coven.

According to the Covenstead Rule, “Wherever you are, a coven there shall be.” For better or for worse, Agatha is still in Westview so her options are limited. She sets out to gather a group of witchy archetypes: a Divination Witch, a Potions Witch, a Protection Witch, and a Green Witch. The first three, though reluctant, do answer Agatha’s call. Lilia Calderu is the Divination Witch, Jennifer Kale is the Potions Witch, and Alice Wu-Gulliver is the Protection Witch. Which just leaves Green…

Te Veo, Rio

Rio Vidal is a Green Witch and clearly extremely strong. Yet Agatha is hesitant to enlist her. Instead, she recruits Mrs. Hart, AKA Sharon Davis, a Westview neighbor with a green thumb. She’s not exactly witchy but she’s a safer bet than Rio. We know Rio will return to help (and probably harm) Agatha throughout the series. Every time she leaves, she says to Agatha “te veo.” In context, it’s a “see ya later.” But literally it’s also Rio telling Agatha, “I see you.”

Teen-Age Dirtbag

Finally, the biggest mystery of Agatha All Along, aside from Wanda’s ultimate fate, is the identity of the Teen. He breaks into Agnes’ home and utters an incantation to pull Agatha to the surface. Like Rio, there’s definitely more to the Teen than he’s letting on. Every time he tells Agatha his name or something about his past, the words are somehow lost.

Fans have been speculating that the Teen is actually, somehow, Wanda’s lost son Billy. At this point, it’s certainly a possibility. Magical teen with a dark past and mother-related tragedy? Sounds a lot like Billy Kaplan/Billy Maximoff. But for now, Teen remains a mystery, as does the truth about Wanda. Perhaps the Witches’ Road will reveal all.
