Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania Trailer Breakdown

Marvel Studios just released the first Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania trailer! The highly anticipated third solo installment in Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne’s journey hits theaters February 17, 2023. In the meantime, Marvel has treated us to a first look — and there’s a lot to see!

Watch the trailer here or on Marvel Entertainment’s official YouTube channel. Then join us below as we break down Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania trailer. Plus, we’ll give you a refresher on where and when you saw some of these characters last.

The trailer opens with a sunny city. Scott Lang, smiling and carefree, is treated like a celebrity because of his role in defeating Thanos. He trots happily through his hometown of San Francisco. Wait — does this mean there could be a potential She-Hulk cameo? Jen lives in Los Angeles, but we won’t rule out these two Californians meeting up.

Anyway, Scott wins “Employee of the Century” at Baskin Robbins, a nod back to the first Ant-Man movie. While he narrates in his happy-go-lucky way, we watch him shake hands, give out high fives, and walk the red carpet with Hope Van Dyne. Finally, a coffee shop employee shouts, “Thank you, Spider-Man!” to Scott as he leaves. As a reminder, due to Doctor Strange’s magical interference, nobody knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man. But to confuse him with Scott Lang, AKA Ant-Man, and a grown man at that, is pretty amusing.

Cassie Lang

Scott missed a lot of his daughter’s life because of the Blip. Now, Cassie Lang is an intelligent teen with inventions and world-saving prospects of her own. In the comics, Cassie even becomes Scott’s sidekick, the quantum-powered Stature. In the trailer, we watch her tinker with a satellite designed to signal the Quantum Realm.

Janet Van Dyne

Janet Van Dyne, who only just recently escaped the Quantum Realm, is horrified. She tells Cassie to turn off the satellite immediately. Unfortunately, it’s far too late for our Pym, Van Dyne, and Lang family unit. Hank, Janet, Hope, Cassie, and Scott all get sucked into the Quantum Realm via a freak home-lab accident. This classic comic book plot looks way cool onscreen, and leads somewhere even cooler.

The Quantum Realm

Of course, we’ve seen the Quantum Realm before. A few scenes in Ant-Man and The Wasp showcased the glowing lights, highly saturated colors, and particle-based danger Janet was subject to for years. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania dials up the scale and the scope.

“Where are we?” Cassie asks her dad. Then we cut to breathtaking scenery. It almost resembles another planet, which is obviously the intention. The Quantum Realm is, after all, its own world. Janet even calls it “a secret universe beneath ours.” It has its own landscapes, gravity, and air quality — though it seems safe enough for humanoid people. This place also has its own rules … and inhabitants.

Ant-Man and The Wasp

Looks like Ant-Man and company are split into two groups. We imagine a huge part of the film will be their separate journeys as they seek each other out within the Quantum Realm. Of course, the way is fraught with peril. Scott and Cassie encounter a whole group of beings. Are they friends or foes?

Meanwhile, Janet, Hope, and Hank fare better with pretty trees and a flying creature as their ride. That makes sense. Janet is accustomed to life down there. And it’s hinted that she might be more involved in this world than we previously thought. When her daughter asks her what she’s so afraid of, she replies rather cryptically, “There’s something I never told you.”

Additional Appearances

Besides the unique and complex creatures of the Quantum Realm we see with Scott and Cassie, we also visit a more affluent area with Janet. The place, which kind of resembles a casino or bar, caters to wealthily dressed clientele. Many have antennae, patterned skin, or are simply not very humanoid. This is excepting a surprise guest: Bill Murray! His character’s name and goals are as yet unknown. But he seems important based on his fancy robe.

Eventually we hit the action montage part of the trailer. Ant-Man and Wasp, reunited, enlarge into giants as they are surrounded by high-tech ships. In another instant, they flee explosions. Scott watches visions of himself become liquid and spiral into ribbons. Stature, suited up, stands at the ready with her dad and Hope. Elsewhere, Janet faces down some freaky praying mantis monsters.

Kang the Conquerer

He Who Remains promised Loki that ruin would come to the universe should he die. Well, Sylvie killed him anyway. And we know by the end of Loki season 1 that the timeline has ruptured. There are a bunch of different Kang Variants out there, all with one purpose: conquer.

This Kang looks dangerous. He also more closely resembles his comic counterpart than He Who Remains did. Curiously, he’s offering to make a deal with Scott Lang. He’ll get him out of the Quantum Realm — for a price. Should we trust him? Is he one of the alright Kangs? We suppose we’ll find out in February!
