The Fastball Special Statue is a work of art from start to finish — don’t believe us? Here’s your exclusive look at how this X-Men collectible evolved from concept art to a three-dimensional digital sculpt.

The concept art below, by designers Ivan Koritarev and Rachel Roubicek, showcases Wolverine and Colossus physically emerging from the comic book backdrop. This initial draft reveals that the unique presentational element has been present from the earliest steps of the statue creation process.

But did you know even the finished comic design itself is all original? Sideshow artists designed never-before-seen artwork for the comic’s covers and interior panels, which tell the sequential story of the Fastball Special popping off the page. That X-Men artwork can be seen on the finished statue, complete with vintage-style comic book textures.

The completed Fastball Special Statue measures 18″ tall x 14.93″ wide x 19.12″ deep and has an option to be displayed with or without the comic book element to suit your X-Men collection.

Sculpting The Scene

However, before the finished collectible makes it to your shelf, it undergoes another mutation from 2D concept to 3D sculpt. Courtesy of sculptor Will Harbottle, the following three-dimensional digital renders highlight some of the earliest stages of the creative process for this statue. Take a look at the details of the crushed Sentinel head base, separate digital elements that unite into the concept statue form, and grayscale renders featuring the incorporated original comic artwork for the unique statue backdrop.

Fastball Special: Colossus and Wolverine Statue

Sideshow presents the Fastball Special: Colossus and Wolverine Statue, a dynamic Marvel collectible inspired by this incredible duo’s iconic battle move.

“First rule about the Fastball Special … you don’t talk about the Fastball Special.”

The Fastball Special: Colossus and Wolverine Statue measures 18” tall, 14.93” wide, and 19.12” deep as a colorful team-up bursts off the comic page and onto your shelf amid a fiery explosion. The excitement begins on the left, with backdrop panels depicting Wolverine and Colossus in their fight against a Sentinel. In the center, our two heroes emerge from the comic book page itself in three-dimensional glory, with the silver Colossus braced to launch a snarling Wolverine. The famous “fastball special” concludes on the right in vibrant panel art as well as on the base with a severed, flaming Sentinel faceplate.

This action-packed, fully sculpted X-Men collectible features custom original art in the style of classic X-Men comics. The astonishing artwork itself is printed on every angle of the backdrop’s exterior, including a front and back cover spread with dialogue bubbles, yellowing on the page edges, and a halftone texture, which recreates that beloved retro look. Additionally, collectors can rearrange the statue with alternate swap-out pieces that allow Colossus and Wolverine to stand separately from the book backdrop as complete figures.
