The Shibuya arc is finally here! To celebrate, let’s look back at some of the best quotes from Jujutsu Kaisen seasons 1 and 2.

“Gambare, gambare.” – Sukuna Ryomen

As far as we’re concerned, Sukuna Ryomen owns this phrase. Gambare means “do your best” in Japanese. It is generally encouraging. However, Sukuna’s tone is quite sarcastic. He tells his adversaries “gambare” before completely obliterating them — usually while exerting little to no effort. Still, since his confidence and pride are hardly misplaced, we can only love when he says this the way he does.

“I don’t know how I’ll feel when I’m dying, but I don’t want to regret the way I lived!” – Yuji Itadori

Alright. We know everybody picks this quote to feature. But it’s so good. How could we leave it off our list? In one of many of his hero moments, Yuji Itadori declares that he won’t live with regret. He’ll save people from curses because it’s the right thing to do. Yuji shows his true bravery and altruism in this scene by refusing to turn a blind eye to human suffering. Now that’s a protagonist worth admiring and rooting for.

“Tuna and mayo.” – Toge Inumaki

Toge Inumaki specializes in cursed speech. He can’t talk in normal words, or he’ll risk hurting people. Thus he only speaks in bento box ingredients/components. You’d think that would limit his interactions and expressions, but that’s not the case! Tuna and mayo, for instance, roughly translates to “do something,” which he first uses to request that his friend remedy an awkward situation. We like this quote a lot because it shows the true range of Toge’s vocabulary.

“Because I’m going to be the head of the Zen’in Clan!” – Maki Zen’in

Maki Zen’in comes from one of the most powerful families in Japan. However, Maki lacks cursed energy — making her weak and useless in the eyes of her clan. Despite their scorn, Maki has gone on to become one of the most impressive and noteworthy sorcerers at Tokyo Jujutsu High. The above quote illustrates how strong her conviction is even in the face of terrible adversity.

“I love myself when I’m pretty and all dressed up! And I love myself when I’m strong!” – Nobara Kugisaki

Nobara Kugisaki is an absolute badass. She is confident in every aspect and facet of herself. Unapologetic about her wants and needs, she is one of the most dynamic characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. Nobara can be a hero while also being emotional, and she can fight while still loving shopping. None of these traits diminish or contradict the others.

“What are you smiling about?” – Megumi Fushiguro

“Nothing.” – Satoru Gojo

Cue the tears. After reliving his own teenage years — and his harrowing separation from his old friend Suguru Geto — Satoru Gojo awakens to find our main trio. His three favorite students are being their usual selves. That is to say, they’re noisy and nosy. Except for his ward Megumi Fushiguro, of course, who notices Gojo’s expression and asks for an explanation. Gojo’s reply, which shows how much he guards his own emotions, is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

“I’m living by the same standards as the people I hate.” – Yuko Ozawa

This quote comes from a recent episode, season 2 episode 30. Structured almost like a “slice of life” anime at the start, we see our Tokyo High trio get some much-needed time off during the first half of the Shibuya premiere. During that time, we also meet an old classmate of Yuji’s.

Yuko Ozawa has changed a lot physically, so she thinks she can more openly pursue Yuji romantically now. Later, Yuko realizes changing her appearance isn’t the most important thing. Yuji still treats her exactly the same. She leaves with the recognition that she fell into the trap her bullies wanted her to. It’s an incredibly emotional moment that deserves a ton of attention before all the action begins.
