At the start of the movie, a fan’s heart literally glows within their chest as the Honmoon strengthens. If you haven’t been to a K-pop concert, that’s exactly how it feels. Chills on your skin as your bias (favorite idol) hits that high note or harmony. Jaw dropping as they perform an impossible dance move. Tears in your eyes as fellow fans hold up their banner projects and sing along to lyrics in English and Korean alike. It’s a completely different fan/artist relationship than any other performer, especially when you bring in the fan community at concerts, cupsleeves, and more.

Gwi-ma, the demon king, sows doubt and despair. In contrast, HUNTR/X inspires self-love. “When you mess with our fans, we need to make it hurt,” they explain. Demons cross the line by threatening the fans. While this is a fictional story, that’s honestly how it feels in the K-pop world. Your idols are super protective (not of actual demons, but metaphorical ones), and you protect them in turn. It’s symbiotic in an almost indescribably special way.

This quote is fun just in general. With great comedic timing and an emphasis on how little of a threat the girls perceive these demons to be, it really sets the tone for the characters’ confidence. After all, it’s really important to see women eating and making overly expressive (often deemed “ugly”) faces — in animation and beyond. Let women eat and be “undesirable” onscreen!

Conversely to all of the Hunters’ attempts to inspire and uplift, the demons feed on dark sides. They are ruled by shame and fear. Being a demon means being constantly reminded of your mistakes. Demons internalize their hatred, guilt, and regret until it eats them from the inside. Jinu, in particular, is shackled by the terrible choices he made and he cannot forgive himself. When Rumi accuses him of callousness, he corrects her. He’ll never be free of those chains, and he can feel their weight every single agonizing second of his existence.

Mira reminds the girls that they are first and foremost a team. When the stakes are this high, you need backup. You absolutely need support from your friends and group members.

The above quote references an important aspect of healing and accepting yourself, which is by actually confronting what’s wrong. Don’t sweep your bad feelings under the rug or stick your head in the sand. You have to face your demons to be free of them. Only by recognizing the hurt, trauma, or negative emotions can you truly push past them and blossom into your true self.

However, in the movie, does Rumi truly need fixing? Her lyrics emphasize refusing to hide or being weighed down by the past. Yet Rumi’s obsession with controlling and “fixing” her allegedly undesirable traits leads to her major breakdown. But, hey, this duet was a first draft for Rumi and Jinu. Although they had the right themes in mind, they both still had some growing to do after their impromptu collaboration.

A fan’s relationship to their favorite idol (their bias) can be beautiful. But it can also be destructive. Love twists into something dark and ugly when it becomes obsession. When the Saja Boys reveal their true selves, they’re feeding into this toxic dynamic. You won’t have problems if you sell your soul to them. Offer your emotions, your cash, your entire personality. What are you outside of their fan? They can make you feel better than any of those trivial things like friends, family, or true fulfillment. While the song is insanely good, you have to be scared of these villains’ true intentions.
