The Best Shadowheart Quotes and Dialogue in Baldur’s Gate 3

[Major spoilers for Shadowheart’s questline in Baldur’s Gate 3!]

Shadowheart contains multitudes (despite not remembering most of them). She’s pretty, she’s witty, and she’s got a wicked case of amnesia. Combine this with her goth aesthetic, aloof attitude, and the charming voice talents of actress Jennifer English, and it’s no surprise Shadowheart won over nearly 50% of players pursuing party romance in the first year after Baldur’s Gate 3 launched.

Like sister goddesses Shar and SelĂ»ne, Shadowheart brings both darkness and light to Tav’s party in her words and deeds. And as the party leader, you can encourage her towards one path or the other as you progress through her complex, emotional story. Should you choose to embark on the Daughter of Darkness companion quest, you’ll uncover Shadowheart’s, well, rather shadowed origins — and help her find herself along the way.

With over 170 hours of cinematics in the game, which are impossible to discover in only a single playthrough, there are many memorable Shadowheart moments you may or may not have encountered. You may know a few of her quotes only because they’ve turned into iconic internet memes. It all depends on the choices you make — will you help your half-elf cleric find her inner light or stay loyal to the darkness? Or will you drop her from your party entirely after the 12th consecutive failed cantrip in a row?

10 of Shadowheart’s Best Quotes in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Ignis!
  • I like her. She looks like she could throw me over her shoulder and carry me to safety … should the need arise.
  • I’m tired of darkness.
  • You’ll need to do a lot more legwork before I commit to any hip work.
  • Even if I could have made it this far without you, I don’t think I would have wanted to.
  • I couldn’t help but overhear … well, alright. I could’ve helped but didn’t.
  • You can’t cast a shadow without some light.
  • Do you know why I love night orchids?
  • You mean I’d get to prove you wrong and thrash you? I love it.
  • I may be a hater and a gatekeeper, but I’m also god’s favorite princess and the most interesting girl in the world.

“Ignis!”

  • This voice line is the verbal component for casting the cantrip Fire Bolt
  • While other characters have the same line if they cast the same spell, Shadowheart is infamous for it
  • Fire Bolt is available to Shadowheart because of her half-elf lineage
  • Ignis is the Latin word for fire

Early in the game, most players are likely to have Shadowheart in their party. She is one of two companion characters who can be encountered on the Nautiloid ship and recruited. Even if you try to leave her in her illithid pod, there are several failsafes to get Shadowheart to cross your path. Her story, and the Mysterious Artefact she carries, are a huge part of the game’s plot.

So that means you’ll be bringing her into combat a lot in the early game and trying to get some value out of her support-based cleric abilities. Players who used Shadowheart to deal some damage with the cantrip Fire Bolt probably heard the invocation, “Ignis!” more times than they can count. Unfortunately, Shadowheart also has a tendency to miss her attack rolls due to suboptimal stats early in the game. That Ignis turned into an Ig-miss more often than not.

“I like her. She looks like she could throw me over her shoulder and carry me to safety … should the need arise.”

  • Triggers in Act 1 when recruiting Karlach
  • Can be heard if Shadowheart is in your party when you encounter the tiefling barbarian

One of the best parts of Baldur’s Gate 3 is that the companions all have rich interactions with one another. Every battle, conversation, and idle exploration changes vastly in tone based on which combination of characters you have following you. Their backstories and personalities all intersect and clash at various points, making the adventure feel full and dramatic.

If Shadowheart is in your party when first encountering the recruitable Karlach, she will express some admiration for the muscle-bound demon woman. And honestly? Same. While companion characters can’t romance each other while you’re playing a custom Tav, that doesn’t stop us from shipping them with one another!

“I’m tired of darkness.”

  • Triggers in Act 3 late into Shadowheart’s companion quest Daughter of Darkness
  • Requires players to meet sufficient romance conditions with Shadowheart
  • Can only be heard if players encouraged Shadowheart to leave the order of Sharrans and follow SelĂ»ne, informally referred to as her “good” path

While Shadowheart’s story deals heavily with light and dark — thanks to the looming presence of twin goddesses Shar and SelĂ»ne — her morality is anything but black and white. But after a lifetime of deception and being literally left in the dark by Mother Superior Viconia DeVir, it is possible for your companion to go down a brighter path.

When you reach the city of Baldur’s Gate, players with a deep enough romance with Shadowheart may discover this emotional heart-to-heart conversation. It requires you to have encouraged her to leave the Sharran order. She will then confess to you that she wants to live a life surrounded by color, growing flowers and finding a house in which to start a family with you. It’s a sweet and vulnerable exchange that further solidifies her immense character growth since her unflinching devotion to Shar in Act 1.

“You’ll need to do a lot more legwork before I commit to any hip work.”

  • Triggers in Act 1 at the camp party with the tiefling refugees
  • Can be heard if the player has not sufficiently met conditions to romance Shadowheart

Shadowheart dominated the romance statistics Larian released after the game’s first full year. Over 50% of playthroughs reached the final arc of Shadowheart’s romance storyline, and of that, 48.8% reached the final romance scene itself. She was also the “most kissed” character, with 27 million kisses being requested of her throughout all playthroughs in that first year.

While not as prolific at rejecting players as Astarion was, Shadowheart is not a romantic pushover. Her aloof attitude and amnesia make it difficult for her to want to open up to the player character. If you approach her at the celebration with the tieflings in Act 1 and she isn’t interested, she’ll let you down with this sharp wordplay. Of course, her playing hard to get may make you want her even more. Try harder next act!

“Even if I could have made it this far without you, I don’t think I would have wanted to.”

Similar to her line about being tired of darkness, this heartfelt confession can be triggered in Act 3 by a Tav who has sufficiently romanced Shadowheart enough to be in her good graces. When Shadowheart is put on the path of the Selûnites, she is tired by a life of betrayal and loss caused by the Sharrans manipulating her. She has you to thank for accompanying her on the journey.

As the hero character in a video game, of course all of the companions in the party require your intercession to actually progress their plots. But this admission is honest and vulnerable — a far cry from the Shadowheart who was refusing your small talk in camp because she didn’t trust you or anyone else who wasn’t her Mother Superior.

“I couldn’t help but overhear … well, alright. I could’ve helped but didn’t.”

  • Triggers in Act 1 during camp downtime with the party
  • Can be heard while characters converse about the tadpole infections and how to cure them

As we’ve established, Shadowheart is a sassy and very sarcastic character, especially in the early stages of the story. Her reluctance to get close with the party is challenged by her desire for information, especially in light of being an amnesiac. Before she lets herself be vulnerable, she’ll use all manner of quips and verbal sparring to push her companions away.

If you catch her eavesdropping on you and the others, confronting her will result in this humorously self-aware admission. With members in your camp like the ambitious wizard Gale, the stalwart but stymied-by-devils warlock Wyll, vampiric Astarion, and others, you’re more than swimming in strange bedfellows. It’s no surprise Shadowheart decided not to keep her guard up in order to get the latest gossip.

“You can’t cast a shadow without some light.”

  • Triggers in Act 3 after Shadowheart learns her true name is Jenevelle Hallowleaf
  • Can be heard when the cleric decides to keep the name Shadowheart rather than be called by her old name
  • This conversation occurs if Shadowheart has abandoned the religion of Shar after what Shar’s followers did to her and her family

The duality of light and dark is ever-present in Shadowheart’s story. Eventually, it is revealed that she was never a Sharran to begin with, stolen by their order and made to forget that her family raised her under the light of SelĂ»ne, the moon goddess. Still, that doesn’t make it easy for her to just accept the truth. In some ways, Shadowheart is just as much a part of who she is as Jenevelle was at one time.

While your Tav can voice their opinion on her name, ultimately, Shadowheart chooses not to return to her old identity. Her quote and reasoning perfectly embody the themes of her story arc. Here, she acknowledges that good and bad must exist together, as must light and dark. One without the other is simply not the way of the world. And so she also reconciles her past with her present and future in one simple, beautiful phrase.

“Do you know why I love night orchids?”

  • Triggers in Act 3 in the endgame of Shadowheart’s story
  • Can be heard as Shadowheart informs the player their time together is over
  • Requires the player character to reach the end of Shadowheart’s romance while Shadowheart remains loyal to Shar, informally referred to as her “bad” path

Night orchids are a recurring symbol of Shadowheart’s story — it is one of the few things she does remember about her life, even in her amnesiac state. When players progress through her personal quest, Daughter of Darkness, there comes a point where players either encourage her to remain loyal to Shar, the Lady of Loss, or return to her true path under SelĂ»ne, goddess of the moon. If you encourage her to stay in the Sharran order, often seen as a more morally negative decision, don’t be surprised when her loyalty to her goddess comes before her love for you.

As she lets you down, however, Shadowheart does offer this tender bit of introspection. The full quote goes:

Do you know why I love night orchids? In part, because they do not last. They bloom where few ever see them, and in that moment, they’re perfect. Then, they return to the darkness that birthed them.

It also gives insight into how she views herself in this moment. Though she chooses to return to the darkness she feels most comfortable with, you as the player had an opportunity to see her truly bloom. It’s bittersweet but doesn’t leave players feeling like this complex moral quandary was an objectively “evil” choice. Again, there is beauty in the darkness, just as there is in the light.

“You mean I’d get to prove you wrong and thrash you? I love it.”

  • Triggers in Act 1 during a camp confrontation between Shadowheart and Lae’zel
  • Can be heard after Lae’zel challenges Shadowheart to a duel

In Act 1, frenemies Shadowheart and Lae’zel are more alike than they want to admit — fiercely loyal zealots who serve deceptive goddesses, now forced into proximity because of their shared illithid tadpole infections. But Shadowheart has a deep distrust of githyanki in general, and Lae’zel hates … well, most people who aren’t githyanki.

In the early stages of the plot, all of the companions anxiously seek a cure to their impending ceremorphosis (painful forced transformation into a mindflayer drone). Everyone believes their method is best. But as tensions rise, Lae’zel’s warrior instincts kick in. The party doesn’t fully trust one another, and Shadowheart isn’t afraid to step up to the plate and push back. (But for the sake of everyone getting out alive, your Tav will probably have to play peacemaker.)

“I may be a hater and a gatekeeper, but I’m also god’s favorite princess and the most interesting girl in the world.”

  • Triggers during the post-game epilogue
  • Requires the character player to be a githyanki in order for the dialogue option to be available
  • Larian added this line in an update patch as a reference to popular internet memes about Shadowheart

It isn’t often that memes become canon within their video game worlds. But that’s exactly what happened when Larian released the Epilogue chapter for players in a patch several months after the game’s launch day. This new, hidden dialogue exchange can only be accessed by players whose Tavs are of the githyanki lineage (remember, Shadowheart has beef with githyanki!), correctly choosing several dialogue options in a conversation.

After challenging Shadowheart’s assertion that “everything sounds good” when she says it, your Tav can whisper a nonsense phrase to test her theory. What results is this hilariously meta reference to the fandom’s nickname for everyone’s beloved goth girl with religious trauma. The “god’s favorite princess” phrase became so widespread across the internet that the developers (and voice actress Jennifer English) had to pay tribute to it in the most humorous fashion. Truly an end of game reward worth discovering!
