The Biggest Comics News from SDCC 2025 – Marvel, DC, & More

In addition to all of the television, movie, and media announcements, San Diego Comic-Con also has plenty of, well, comics! It’s all in the name, of course. And as it does every year, the con floor for 2025 featured dozens of your favorite publishers — from the Big 2 to indie powerhouses that boasted plenty of news, exclusives, and signings all weekend long.

While it might be easier for publishing news to slip under the radar during the action-packed weekend, we wanted to highlight some of the biggest comic book announcements you might have missed from SDCC 2025. Get ready to update your pull list with new reveals from Marvel, DC, IDW’s horror imprint, and more.

Buffy and Angel Return to Comics — Dynamite

Following the franchise’s departure from Boom Studios in 2023, Dynamite has teased the triumphant return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel with two new ongoing series to both be written by Kelly Thompson (Absolute Wonder Woman, Hawkeye, Black Cloak). While they chose not to reveal the names of the artist(s) attached, a cover by David Nakayama was teased.

Plot details were also kept under wraps, but given the transfer of license, it’s safe to assume these stories will be wholly independent of any previous continuity from publishing by Boom Studios, Dark Horse, and IDW.

Return to Sleepy Hollow with IDW Dark — IDW

As exclusively announced by Entertainment Weekly, IDW Dark (the publisher’s horror imprint) is bringing chills and thrills with a Return to Sleepy Hollow comic series based on Tim Burton’s nightmarish 1999 classic. The book is written by Casey Gilly, best known for her horror work on books like Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer, Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft, and Archie Horror, with strikingly beautiful art by Savanna Mayer, making their comics debut.

Return sees Ichabod Crane urgently asked to return to Sleepy Hollow, 15 years after the events of the film. A deeper, darker supernatural mystery plagues the town as Crane reunites with his estranged love Katrina Van Tassel. The series is filled with spine-chilling horror, gothic romance, Victorian funeral rites, and tender, emotional moments. It’s a tale “that is sure to knock your head off!” according to editor Riley Farmer.

Something is Killing the Children Aiming for 100 Issues — Boom Studios

Writer James Tynion IV excited fans this weekend after sharing on the “Slaughterverse” panel that his hit horror series Something is Killing the Children is aiming to reach (and has been greenlit for) at least 100 issues. This update comes thanks to the acquisition of Boom Studios by publisher Random House. This is especially notable considering SIKTC isn’t even at issue #50 just yet!

Nun More Goth: Marian Heretic — Boom Studios

Another new announcement for the weekend was writer Tini Howard (Excalibur, Catwoman, Euthanauts) and artist Joe Jaro’s (Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer) new creator-owned series Marian Heretic. A take on nunsploitation and monster hunting, Marian Heretic follows a powerful witch hunter and Mother Superior who is labeled a blasphemer by the Church. Taking a dark deal to become a holy protector, Marian dispenses judgment at the cost of her soul.

Boom Studios runs a prestigious slate of original series, and Marian Heretic joined their ranks in October 2025.

Ultimate Endgame Comes to the Marvel Universe — Marvel

In addition to announcing the upcoming end of Jonathan Hickman’s celebrated Ultimate Spider-Man series, Marvel revealed that an endgame is coming to the Ultimates universe! Ultimate Endgame #1 kicks off a five-part event for December 2025, written by Deniz Camp with art by Jonas Scharf and more.

Marvel fans have been anticipating the return of the Maker, a dark alternate version of Reed Richards with limitless ambition to remake the world as he sees fit. Now escaped from his imprisonment, he will confront the heroes from all five Ultimate titles Marvel has currently been publishing. The fate of this new universe will be his decision alone. Fans were also given a preview of a foil cover for issue #1 by Derrick Chew.

Absolute Universe Expands — DC Comics

Throughout the weekend, DC announced numerous updates to its publishing slate, especially when it comes to the Absolute Universe of stories. Fresh off an Eisner win for Absolute Wonder Woman, DC revealed an Absolute Evil oneshot set to shake up the second year of the series. In this special by Al Ewing, Giuseppe Camuncoli, and Stefano Nesi, fans meet the Absolute versions of The Joker, Ra’s al Ghul, Elenore Thawn, and more — plus, two Absolute characters who will “change the course of [this] universe.”

Plus, news of Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Batman meeting in Diana’s book was shared, while the debuts of Catwoman, Scarecrow, and Dick Grayson were teased for Bruce’s title. And joining the cadre of super heroes, reimagined by Darkseid without their definitive origins, is Absolute Green Arrow by Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque. This version of Oliver Queen, however, will still be a billionaire with archery skills, who is inspired by the events of Absolute Evil to be a better class of billionaire. Fans can see where he falls into the Absolute story in May 2026, joining Absolute Green Lantern, Absolute Flash, and Absolute Martian Manhunter.

Ignition Press Stuns with New Announcements — Ignition Press

New on the scene, independent publisher Ignition Press had a massive debut at SDCC 2025. The publisher was co-founded by several extremely experienced names in comics — film producer Eric Gitter (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), former Boom Studios president of publishing and marketing Filip Sablik, former IDW editor in chief Jamie S. Rich, and comic creator Jeremy Haun. Ignition Press states they are a creator-first publisher, promoting bold innovation and long-term creative ownership.

All weekend long, they hosted a number of events to promote upcoming titles like Murder Podcast: The Cold Open, The Beauty, No Place: The Cold Open, Voyeur, and many more. Creators like Haun, Stephanie Williams, Cullen Bunn, Leah Williams, Tim Seeley, and more attended signings and fans were given swag like pins, stickers, and even free coffee.

Off the Page Activations

Among their more unique activations, they also hosted a live SFX transformation in anticipation of The Beauty, a series returning after first being published at Image Comics. In this world, beauty and physical perfection can be contracted like a sexually transmitted disease — and its outward effect comes at a horrible price. Live makeup demos transformed several models into these “infected” figures.

Ignition Press pushed the envelope again with a one night only, 21+ burlesque show in celebration of the heist book Voyeur, hosted by comedian Ben Kliewer. Their pop-up offered press, podcasters, and journalists comfortable seating, air conditioning, and refreshments. In terms of first impressions, Ignition Press brought their absolute A-game this year and fans couldn’t be more excited to see what their future holds.

Deadpool/Batman Crossover Covers — DC and Marvel

News of this upcoming crossover has been out for a while, but over the weekend, Marvel and DC revealed several new covers for the Marvel half of the upcoming Deadpool/Batman #1 showdown. Artwork by Russell Dauterman, Frank Miller, and Daniel Warren Johnson was shown for the September 17 release, followed by DC’s half of the event (aptly titled Batman/Deadpool #1) in November.

Dauterman’s cover specifically pays homage to George Perez’s The Infinity Gauntlet #1 (1991), while Miller’s depicts Batman and Wolverine and Johnson’s shows Big Barda and The Thing clobbering one another.

Deadpool/Batman #1 (Marvel Comics) is written by Zeb Wells with Kevin Smith, Kelly Thompson, Chip Zdarsky, Al Ewing, and Frank Miller. It features art by Greg Capullo with Frank Miller, Dike Ruan, Adam Kubert, Gurihiru, and Terry Dodson.
