Here comes the Fastball Special!

The finished comic design itself is all original and custom-made to compliment the two character statue sculpt. Sideshow artists designed never-before-seen art for the comic’s covers and interior panels, which tell the sequential story of the Fastball Special popping off the page. This X-Men artwork can be seen on the finished statue, complete with vintage-style comic book textures, aging, and color palettes.

While the panels themselves pop off the pages, much like the characters, the sculpted cover looks like an ordinary king-size comic. It bends at the “spine” and has all the cover treatment that Marvel readers recognize. We’d definitely pick up this king-size special if it ever graced the shelves of our local comic book shop!

But you’d be surprised to learn this comic doesn’t actually exist! Nobody pulled archived X-Men art from the internet. This art is all-new and all-original. And now you can read the “comic” yourself with this behind the scenes look at the art files.

Marvel Comic Art by Ian MacDonald and Ivan Koritarev

Ian MacDonald created the rough layouts for the statue base’s comic art. Ivan Koritarev — who also helped with the Fastball Special concept art — completed the finished illustration. Together, these two artists put together a spectacular 7-panel story of bravery and badassery.

We start on the front and back covers with Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus, Wolverine, and Cyclops facing down massive, mutant-killing machines known as Sentinels. Plus, the back section teases a shocking tale called “Secrets of the X-Mansion!”. Knowing this dysfunctional family, it’s either super dramatic — or we’ve finally discovered who’s been stealing Logan’s beers out of the fridge. Either way, these secrets can’t stop them from coming together to stop this imminent threat. We hope they survive the experience!

Next come the original story panels. Faced with overwhelming odds, these two X-men devise a plan. They’ll use their famous move — the Fastball Special! Having decided this, Colossus launches Wolverine at their infamous foe. Here comes the Fastball Special!

 

Will this tactic work? It’s never failed them before! And sure enough, the Sentinel is reduced to smoldering smithereens thanks to Wolverine’s Adamantium claws and Colossus’ superhuman strength.

Breaking the Fourth Wall

When laid out on the three-dimensional sculpture, fans will get to see the Fastball Special literally leaping out of the pages of the book, forming the remainder of the statue before diving back into the panels for the epic, explosive conclusion.

The Fastball Special: Colossus and Wolverine Statue measures 18” tall, 14.93” wide, and 19.12” deep as a colorful team-up bursts off the comic page and onto your shelf amid a fiery explosion. The excitement begins on the left, with backdrop panels depicting Wolverine and Colossus in their fight against a Sentinel. In the center, our two heroes emerge from the comic book page itself in three-dimensional glory, with the silver Colossus braced to launch a snarling Wolverine. The famous “fastball special” concludes on the right in vibrant panel art as well as on the base with a severed, flaming Sentinel faceplate.

This action-packed, fully sculpted X-Men collectible features custom original art in the style of classic X-Men comics. The astonishing artwork itself is printed on every angle of the backdrop’s exterior, including a front and back cover spread with dialogue bubbles, yellowing on the page edges, and a halftone texture, which recreates that beloved retro look.
