The Coolest Moments from Marvel’s What If…? Season 2

By Nick Cimarusti on Dec 23, 2024

Season 2 of Marvel’s What If…? animated series once again captured the truly infinite potential of the Multiverse. Each episode is filled with intriguing twists on familiar characters as well as entirely new concepts. We’ve already seen the powerful effects of season 1 and season 2 brought us even more multiversal shifts.

The breakout star of season 2 is Kahhori, a Mohawk woman who gains immense power through the Space Stone. As in season 1, Peggy Carter, AKA Captain Carter, steps up as a Guardian of the Multiverse — especially when an old friend turns into a desperate foe.

Here are the best moments from each of the nine What If…? season 2 episodes! Just in time to prepare for What If…? season 3, with eight nightly premieres beginning December 22.

What If… Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?

Whether she’s a Guardian of the Galaxy, plotting against Thanos, or working for the Nova Corps, you can count on Nebula to get the job done. She is efficient and ruthless and her signature triple-crossing style leaves anyone’s head spinning if they try to follow her every move. Nebula is always one step ahead of the competition.

What If… Peter Quill Attacked Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?

We’ve all thought it — Thor looks s bit like an ’80s hair metal rock star. When a young Peter Quill tries to help his father Ego’s horrific mission, only the mighty thunder of Thor can strike Star-Lord down. To Peter’s disappointment, Thor Odinson is not, in fact, a member of Van Halen. Maybe in another universe.

What If… Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?

The puns are off the charts in this Die Hard-inspired Christmas caper within Avengers Tower. Happy Hogan and Darcy Lewis are trying to make the Avengers’ holiday party a success — of course, all does not go merry and bright. Fortunately, the Avengers swoop in to help save the day wearing their finest holiday apparel. Nat is dressed as a ballerina from a Nutcracker mission, Cap is in an elf suit, and Clint and Bruce are fresh off a battle for the last toy.

What If… Iron Man Crashed into the Grandmaster?

Along with Tony Stark’s Sakaarian Suit, all of the main characters shine with a new set of snazzy nicknames. Grandmaster dubs Iron Man as Mister Metal Mojo Man and Gamora, whose rough exterior slowly peels away, is not only called “Vile Asparagus Woman” but also Darth Thanos. Plus, in keeping with the What If…? tradition of defeating Thanos before he Snaps, Gamora vaporizes her father with new ally Iron Man’s help. Take that, Mad Titan.

What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?

Captain Carter and Black Widow team up to stop a very dangerous Steve Rogers. In this reality, the Red Room commandeered the Hydra Stomper and used it to keep Steve alive as a killing machine, much like the Winter Soldier. Coincidentally, Bucky Barnes is now Secretary of State. But the highlight of the episode is its surprise ending — even Uatu the Watcher is caught off guard when chaos magic summons Peggy into the custody of an Elizabethan Scarlet Witch and Nick Fury.

What If… Kahhori Reshaped the World?

Kahhori is a Mohawk woman who has heard legends of a Forbidden Lake, a place known to swallow people up without a trace. When Spanish colonizers invade Kahhori’s village, she and her brother flee but Kahhori accidentally falls into the lake. She is imbued with the power of the Space Stone and learns to wield that power with innate talent. It’s inspiring to watch her step into her own as a hero, which culminates in a blaze of success when she returns to her people and saves them from the colonizers. Seeing Kahhori stop a spray of bullets and later burst the Spanish throne into pieces are definitely standout moments of the entire What If…? series.

What If… Hela Found the Ten Rings?

Finally, Hela returns! Marvel’s Goddess of Death knows how to make an entrance. Her journey almost mirrors Thor’s loss of power in his debut film, since both are banished from Asgard by Odin and stripped of their gifts. Hela lands in Midgard and encounters Wenwu. She seeks to harness the Ten Rings against her father and she travels to Ta Lo for training from Jiayi. The battle sequences in this episode are beautiful but Hela’s breakthrough while surrounded by laundry is a moving, private moment. That’s when she learns her true power.

What If… the Avengers Assembled in 1602?

Seeing the Avengers in 1602 is certainly interesting. Once again, a completely different scenario brings out core traits for our beloved heroes even if they are decked out in Elizabethan cosplay. Most notably, the Steve Rogers of this universe works as a Robin Hood figure, stealing from wealthy fools like Loki to give back to those who need it. Steve looks pretty good in all green, too.

What If… Strange Supreme Intervened?

When Strange Supreme enlists the help of Captain Carter to capture a Universe Killer, he promises to return Peggy to her original universe. However, this is nothing more than a plot to resurrect his own universe. With the help of Kahhori, Captain Carter defies Strange Supreme. He tries to use the memory of Steve Rogers to manipulate Peggy into following him, but Captain Carter resists after a moment of hesitation. She says, “I would never do this for Steve,” reaffirming her pure-hearted bravery as the hero of multiple universes.

From Happy Hogan’s festive shenanigans to the Avengers of 1602, which season 2 episode of What If…? was your favorite?
