Court of the Dead in Development as Animated Series
Sideshow partners with esteemed studio Lex and Otis to develop its original dark fantasy horror property, Court of the Dead, as an animated series.
Sideshow is a pop culture collectibles lifestyle brand, known for its museum-quality pop culture collectibles. The dark fantasy universe of the Court of the Dead is Sideshow’s debut original property. Launched in 2013, the Court of the Dead boasts more than 60 collectibles and fine art prints, a library of five books (Insight Editions), a successfully Kickstarted tabletop board game (USAopoly), and a curated collection of seven active licensees (including Skybound, Han Cholo and Badali) – with more to come in 2019 and beyond.
“Taking the Court of the Dead into animated storytelling is a natural next step for the brand,” said Tom Gilliland, creator of the Court of the Dead and Chief Creative Officer of Sideshow. “Only animation could capture the all-encompassing fantastical Underworld. It has always been our intent in building new worlds to bring those stories to life for our amazing and dedicated fan base.”
Gilliland continued to add that, “Jay Oliva has long been a friend and partner of Sideshow, and it made perfect sense to work with him when he approached us about animation.”
Jay Oliva is an entertainment industry veteran, whose credits include directing multiple series for Warner Brothers Animation and contributing to major motion pictures such as “Batman vs Superman,” “Deadpool,” and “Wonder Woman” – among others. Oliva founded the premiere animation studio Lex and Otis in 2019. Lex and Otis specializes in development art and storyboards for animation, video games, film, and TV.
“Collaborating with Sideshow on the animated series of the Court of the Dead has been at the top of my list since I first saw their first statue from the line years ago,” said Jay Oliva. “Tom’s vision and scope for Court is unparalleled and I am thrilled to help him and the team at Sideshow develop it into an epic animated series!”
The Court of the Dead was created by Tom Gilliland, Sideshow’s Chief Creative Officer. For Tom, who was raised on a diet of heavy metal music and Dungeons & Dragons, the property is his version of a super hero team – a seemingly horrific group of anti-heroes striving for redemption through self-determination. Led by Death (known as the “Alltaker” in this universe), the Underworld must band together the divergent factions of Bone, Flesh and Spirit to rise up and rebel against the corrupt armies of Heaven and Hell.
