Critical Role Campaign 3: Who are the Heroes of Bells Hells?

By Amy Chase on Feb 20, 2025

One of the many thrills of watching Critical Role is seeing these seasoned storytellers and renowned voice actors bring vibrant new characters to life. Fans delight in seeing their stories unfold over the course of hundreds of hours of play, as the heroes are challenged and their powers grow. Secrets emerge, alliances and relationships are formed, and by the end of the series, you feel as if you’ve seen these individuals evolve and mature before your very eyes.

But it takes a long time to get to that point, where a group of disparate adventurers become a true team and found family, standing against the forces of evil. With Critical Role Campaign 3: Bells Hells officially reaching its conclusion in 2025, the 10th anniversary year for the entertainment brand, let’s look back at who was introduced to us at the start of the adventure in the city of Jrusar.

(Note: We’ll be covering the early campaign details for the characters and trying to avoid big late-game reveals for Critters who aren’t caught up, but be advised there might be some light spoilers!)

Ashton Greymoore

Ashton Greymoore is a literal punk rock! Played by Taliesin Jaffe, the Terran brawler of Bells Hells is known for his cranky demeanor and chaotic abilities in battle. Ashton is fueled by rage and hurt, carrying scars both physical and emotional after a job went wrong with a previous group of adventurers. Abandoned by their old allies, the gem-hued smuggler decided to go it alone and be self-reliant while working to pay back old debts. He is introduced alongside Fresh Cut Grass, who is learning to be a therapist for their friend.

Ashton carries a glass hammer and is recognized by the mysterious, swirling crystal embedded in the side of his head. With amethyst-like hair and a green complexion, their aesthetic mixes natural earth tones with the harsh red and black of their studded, sleeveless jacket.

Ashton’s gold scars are also a nod to the Japanese art of kintsugi, the process of repairing cracks and broken pottery with gold veins, signifying beauty in the physical flaws rather than trying to hide them.

Laudna

Played by Marisha Ray, Laudna is the fun-scary spellcaster of the team with a haunting exterior and a bubbly personality. As a result of bad necromancy (though, is it ever good?) she became undead, imbued with magic as the result of a dark pact. The ultimate reveal of her origin was quickly picked up on by many eager fans who noted connections between her fate and Vox Machina’s encounter with the Sun Tree in Whitestone, though we won’t delve into it too deeply here. It’s exceptionally tragic, though, and forms the crux of her struggles with her own inner shadows.

Even before her undeath, Laudna has innate magical abilities, though she is given a bad reputation by others in Whitestone as a result. After becoming a bit of a recluse, she eventually meets Imogen Temult in Gelvaan before their arrival in Jrusar. The two room together with Madam Zhudanna, and the two magic-adept women are very supportive of one another as they seek information about the origins of their abilities.

Laudna also has a love of crafting and fixing dilapidated homes. She crafts a puppet-turned-familiar for herself, named Pate de Rolo. She eventually creates several more macabre marionettes named Sashimi and Caviar.

Fearne Calloway

A puckish faun from the realm of the fey, Fearne Calloway has a fiery spirit both inside and out. Played by Ashley Johnson, Fearne is adept at wildfire magic as well as thievery and she loves to make mischief. She has a familiar named Little Mister, who takes the form of a monkey, though he was spawned from Thordak’s crater in Emon and also has fiery origins.

Alongside Bells Hells, Fearne seeks to learn more about the Prime Material Plane, after spending most of her life in the Feywild under the care of “Nana” Morri, the Fatestitcher. Orym is actually the first of her future teammates that she ever met, on an adventure with the Crown Keepers in Tal’Dorei. After their encounter with the Spider Queen’s Circlet of Barbed Vision, one of her hands grew into a black claw. Her mystical appearance is often dotted with dangerous flowers and moss on her hooves, giving her a dreamy, fantastical look.

Fearne is often prankish and flirtatious with several of her teammates, wanting to have a good time on their adventures. She also forms a strong friendship with the prickly Ashton, and bonds with Imogen and Laudna over their shared “witchy” abilities.

Chetney Pock O’Pea

Chetney Pock O’Pea, Travis Willingham’s second character in the campaign, is a cranky, elderly gnome with a monster of a secret. Cursed with lycanthropy, the diminutive blood hunter can turn into a massive werewolf at will (and occasionally, against his will). Chetney is also a woodworker, seeking renown for his toy designs and independent work under his C-POP brand.

With the team, he initially keeps his werewolf identity under wraps. But the beast soon emerges in their early crimefighting adventures in Jrusar. Chetney’s struggle then becomes indulging in his animalistic side versus keeping it controlled, given that he does become a danger to the party on a few occasions. Mostly, he supports the younger heroes with his humor, attitude, and strength — though Travis regularly rolls dice to see if Chetney would ever keel over from sheer old age.

Longtime Critters might recognize that Chetney is an honest, more serious (but not too serious) take on the character Chutney Chocolatecane from the “Night Before Critmas” oneshot. Here, the character was one of Santa’s elves who sought revenge on the jolly red man. Some small similarities carried over into the Bells Hells character with his woodwork and general appearance.

Imogen Temult

Laura Bailey’s Imogen Temult has a storm brewing within her soul. A magical prodigy from Marquet’s small town of Gelvaan, she’s a quiet and mostly reserved young woman. She is haunted by terrifying dreams of a red tempest, and has telepathic abilities that allow her to hear the thoughts of others. However, this ability is often overwhelming and keeps her introverted for a time as she places mental blocks to protect her mind (and others’) from her powers.

Meeting with Bells Hells, Imogen seeks entry into the Starpoint Conservatory in Jrusar in order to search for more information about her abilities. She is already close with Laudna, and the two share a room in Madam Zhudanna’s home in the spired city. She has lightning marks on her hands which stem from the use of her considerable yet mysterious psionics.

Despite her quiet nature, she is a quick thinker and isn’t afraid to try to influence others when the situation calls for it. Imogen’s portentous dreams are also what allow Bells Hells to discover the deceased body of Bertrand Bell, leading the group banding together to avenge the elderly swordsman.

Fresh Cut Grass

Fresh Cut Grass, or FCG, is a curious automaton construct dedicated to becoming a caregiver and therapist for their friends. Played by Sam Riegel, he provides Bells Hells with healing and friendly, occasionally naive advice. Always ready to lend a helping hand or swap-out buzz saw attachment in battle, FCG learns to balance his own stress with the challenges facing him and his friends. One of the biggest struggles facing this mysterious machine is whether their own feelings are real, given the lack of a sure soul like their living allies.

FCG has one central wheel for traversal, though comes equipped for adventure with a few assorted gadgets and weapons. He was originally part of a different adventuring party, the Division of Public Benefit, though was the sole survivor of a strange attack that killed all the others. Found by Ashton, the automaton quickly becomes endeared to the brawler.

While there is certainly more to Fresh Cut Grass than meets the eye, he is more focused on the needs of others than his own past. Most importantly, FCG wishes everyone he meets a “smiley day!” to brighten their outlook on life.

Orym of the Air Ashari

Hailing from the region of Tal’Dorei known as Zephrah, Orym comes from the tribe of nature wardens known as the Air Ashari. In the time of the Bells Hells campaign, Vox Machina’s Keyleth has claimed the title of Voice of the Tempest, leading the Air Ashari. Liam O’Brien’s Orym is a loyal warrior and swordsman who adventures from his home in hopes of finding his place in the world. He is also dealing with the loss of his husband and his father, who were killed during an attempted attack on Keyleth’s life.

Orym has a strong sense of duty, and despite his short stature, often ends up as the responsible “babysitter” of the party. His loyalty is not easily won, but when it is, it’s given deeply. Carrying a simple sword and shield, he uses his tactical battle prowess to defend his friends relentlessly with a nimbleness and finesse rather than brute strength.

In addition to many natural elements in the aesthetic of his armor and outfit, Orym has a tattoo of the moons Catha and Ruidus on his arm, symbolizing his relationship with his late husband Will — though it is ironic, given the red moon’s driving presence in Bells Hells’ quest later on in the campaign.

Who are the Crown Keepers?

Several founding members of Bells Hells initially met on the continent of Tal’Dorei during the adventures of the first Exandria Unlimited series (sometimes called ExU Prime). Named for their eventual task of guarding one of the Vestiges of Divergence, the Circlet of Barbed Vision, the Crown Keepers drew together after a debaucherous party in the city of Emon.

While their numbers changed over time, the original team consisted of Fearne Calloway, Orym of the Air Ashari, Dorian Storm, Opal, and Dariax Zaveon. They were later joined by Cyrus Wyvernwind (Dorian’s brother), Fy’ra Rai, and Morrighan Ferus.

While he did not remain with Bells Hells for the full extent of their adventures, the charming musician Dorian Storm is also considered a founding member of the Marquet-based party, and he joined his friends for the conclusion of their struggle against Predathos, the god devourer.

Who is Braius Doomseed?

Over time, adventuring parties grow and change. Occasionally, they lose members as well. Sam Riegel is no stranger to playing multiple characters in a campaign, such as in the case with Scanlan Shorthalt and Taryon Darrington during Vox Machina’s adventures. In the case of Bells Hells, FCG makes a heroic sacrifice to save his friends, leading to the end of the Aeormaton’s journey.

Braius Doomseed is Sam Riegel’s second character in the Bells Hells campaign, a minotaur warrior who serves as an exemplar of the Lord of the Nine Hells and master of tyranny and deception. Charistmatic and flirtatious, he is challenged with the choice of whether to betray his deity or his new allies as they seek to destroy Predathos.

What Happened to Bertrand Bell?

The man for whom the mischievous heroes first came together, Bertrand Bell was Travis Willingham’s first character for Campaign 3 — although his origins are found in supplemental Campaign 1 material.

Bertrand Bell first appeared during “The Search for Grog” oneshot adventure, which took place during the last episode of the Vox Machina campaign after Grog pulled a magical card from the Deck of Many Things and had his soul torn from his body. Given that this incident happened in the epilogue as Matt was winding down the final session, the adventure was only alluded to on screen. Bertrand was Travis’ character who joined Vox Machina to rescue their half-giant friend.

Bertrand Bell was a swordsman with a bombastic attitude who believed his reputation preceded him, leading his ego to dictate much of his flamboyant behavior. It was his untimely death in Jrusar in a dark alley that drew Bells Hells together to avenge him after the nascent campaign’s third episode.

The adventures of Bells Hells may have concluded with the close of Critical Role: Campaign 3, but their exploits will impact the world of Exandria for eons to come. Do you have a favorite hero in this strange and lovable bunch? How about your favorite adventuring party in all of Critical Role‘s campaigns?
