Daredevil Season 2 Confirms Jessica Jones Daughter in MCU

This week, Marvel fans were sent into a minor frenzy with the latest trailer for Daredevil: Born Again season 2. While it’s been no secret that this season features the return of Krysten Ritter as the dour detective, this teaser confirms the arrival of a major Jessica Jones plot point — her daughter.

We last saw Jessica in season 3 of her own series on Netflix, which concluded in 2019. She’d just sent her adoptive sister Trish Walker to the Raft supermax prison after the latter underwent her own violent vigilante streak. The finale included an emotionally charged reunion with ex-flame Luke Cage, who had become the self-appointed “sheriff” of Harlem, and even some psychological taunting from her abuser Kilgrave’s voice inside her head. The private eye was ready to give everything up and run away to Mexico before deciding to do the hard thing — stay and help the people of New York City, no matter how much they don’t deserve it.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Mid-Series Trailer

Now, the subject of rampant vigilantism is high on Kingpin’s radar as he seeks to squash the so-called heroes running around Hell’s Kitchen. And while we don’t exactly know which parts of her continuity will be kept and which won’t, this puts Jessica Jones in his sights. And her daughter may be collateral damage.

But who is this kid? Why are Marvel fans so excited? It doesn’t take a private investigator to dig up all the intel on this daughter of two Defenders. Let’s look at her comic book origins and how that could play into her official MCU appearance:

Who is Jessica Jones’ daughter?

• Jessica Jones has a daughter with Luke Cage named Danielle “Dani” Jones-Cage.
• Jessica was confirmed to be pregnant in Marvel MAX’s Alias #28, the series finale.
• Danielle Cage was born in The Pulse #13 from Marvel Comics.
• The mid-series trailer for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 has Jessica mention “my daughter” for the first time in live-action continuity.

While Jessica didn’t actually appear in the most recent episode, “Gloves Off,” this teaser establishes that the child is a sensitive spot for the leather-clad badass who pretends not to have feelings. Fans will have to wait until the back half of Daredevil’s sophomore outing on Disney+ for more details on who, why, and how. But unless they really pull the rug out from their dedicated comics audience, there’s only one person that daughter could be – Danielle Jones-Cage, daughter of Jessica and Luke Cage.

Danielle Cage debuted in the comics in 2006.

In the original Alias series where the character made her debut, Luke and Jessica were a casual fling. Luke eventually blew Jessica off, but by the series finale issue, Jessica realized her recent bouts of vomiting and irritability (more than usual, at least) were the result of a developing pregnancy, not her alcohol abuse. After defeating the Purple Man, she confessed the truth to Luke Cage and he asked her if she wants to keep the baby. She said yes, and the two admitted their feelings for one another, eager to start a new chapter.

Jessica Jones would spend her next appearances in series like The Pulse and Young Avengers doing her best to abandon drinking and be a better person before her child arrives. Danielle Cage was then born in The Pulse #13, amid a media circus all anxious to get the scoop on this super hero baby. After Dr. Strange delivered the child in the Sanctum Sanctorum, Luke Cage proposed to Jessica, and they were married in a New Avengers Annual special (with Stan Lee as their officiant!).

Dani Cage was named after Iron Fist

• Luke Cage and Danny Rand, the Iron Fist, are good friends and teammates as Heroes for Hire.
• Danielle’s name is a nod to Danny’s importance in Luke and Jessica’s life.
• Alternate Marvel continuities like Secret Love and Captain Marvel: The End show Danny Rand and Misty Knight repaying the favor by naming their daughter Lucy Rand.

It’s no secret that Luke Cage and Danny Rand have one of Marvel’s all-time great bromances. The Heroes for Hire have always had each other’s backs, even in the Bronze Age of publishing when they had their own self-titled series. Power Man and Iron Fist form one half of the street-level Defenders (not the version of the team with Dr. Strange and Valkyrie). In several universes, Iron Fist is also integral in protecting Jessica during her pregnancy, including in one alternate continuity where Luke Cage dies before the birth of his daughter.

It shouldn’t surprise fans, then, that Danielle’s first name was given in honor of Danny Rand. Heck, she’s almost called Dani more than her full name. The connection is further solidified in alternate futures where Danny Rand and Misty Knight (of the Daughters of the Dragon duo) similarly have a child they name Lucy Rand, in honor of Luke.

Dani and Lucy were confirmed to be married in the post-apocalyptic far future of Captain Marvel: The End, which introduced the grown-up children of many heroes, such as Katie Barton (daughter of Hawkeye and Black Widow), Gerry Drew (son of Spider-Woman and a donor), Irene LeBeau (daughter of Rogue and Gambit), and others.

Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ daughter has super powers

• While Earth-616’s Dani is still a toddler, she has been shown to inherit her parents’ super strength.
• Alternate universe depictions of older Dani Cage depict her with additional abilities based on her parents as well as other inherited Marvel powers.
• As a super hero herself, Squirrel Girl was hired to babysit infant Dani just in case a super baby was difficult to handle.

Too young for the Young Avengers, Dani Cage is still technically a toddler in Marvel’s main continuity, and therefore hasn’t been shown using extensive abilities. However, based on information that has been stated by Jessica and Luke in their own comics appearances, their daughter has inherited their shared power of super strength, among others.

In alternate continuities, grown Dani Cage is also shown to possess her mother’s limited flight capabilities as well as her father’s bulletproof skin.

Dani Cage grows up to be Captain America

In the 2015 Ultron Forever miniseries that takes place in the year 20XX on Earth-15061, Dani Cage becomes the new Captain America. With her father’s indestructibility, she doesn’t just carry the shield — she is the shield. Since this miniseries, many alternate continuities have shown Danielle in the red, white, and blue. She wields a voice-powered drone shield that is a replica of Steve Rogers’ own classic disc.

As a prominent legacy hero born from the love of two superpowered individuals, guided by the examples of the Avengers since birth, Dani Cage is the perfect person to blend the past and future of Marvel Comics (of course, only when she’s allowed to actually age up in these stories…). Many alternate universe stories since then have further canonized Captain Cage.

She has also wielded Thor’s hammer

Starting with the Secret Wars return of Old Man Logan, Dani Cage joined the post-apocalyptic future dominated by the Hulks. But in 2019’s Dead Man Logan #11, she became worthy of so much more.

After helping to raise Bruce Banner Jr. in the wasteland, she was almost killed by clones of Mr. Sinister, but not before discovering the long-lost Mjolnir, which no longer had a wielder. It moved in her presence, and she was worthy of raising it and inheriting the powers of Thor. Dani then joined the Avengers of the Wasteland to help protect and rebuild society.

Does the Purple Man have anything to do with Jessica’s daughter?

• Also known as the Purple Man, Zebediah Killgrave (known in the Netflix continuity as just Kilgrave) abused Jessica Jones mentally and physically.
• In Marvel Comics, however, Jessica says he never forced himself on her. Killgrave had nothing to do with Jessica’s pregnancy.
• The 2019 series Jessica Jones: Purple Daughter showed Dani Cage becoming purple temporarily, causing Jessica to doubt everything about herself and her relationships.

Danielle Cage has always been considered Luke Cage’s daughter, but a haunting, thrilling miniseries called Jessica Jones: Purple Daughter (written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Mattia de Iulis) had the PI and even Marvel fans questioning if the Purple Man had secretly fathered the child after all. While I won’t fully spoil that gripping saga for you here, it’s safe to say that no, thankfully the abusive Zebediah Killgrave has nothing to do with Dani Cage’s birth. Thank goodness.

Adaptational Differences with the Purple Man

One place where the Netflix adaptation of Jessica Jones differed greatly from her comic book counterpart was that Netflix Jessica confirms that Kilgrave did in fact sexually assault her while she was his hostage. However, in the original Alias comics, Jessica clarifies for Luke Cage that Killgrave never actually touched her, but made her wish he would via his powers of suggestion and manipulation.

Don’t get me wrong, he still kept her hostage and violated her in numerous other ways in the comics — he is not getting excused here. But according to her original writer Brian Michael Bendis, there were no physical relations between the two on Earth-616.

And Netflix continuity’s very un-purple Kilgrave got his neck snapped (the least of what he deserved) in the season 1 finale. That means there is no chance that the Purple Man has any involvement with the child in any part of the Marvel multiverse.
