Batman’s got plenty of gadgets. He also has an ever growing family of sidekicks and reformed super-villains. But did you know that Batman also has a best friend — and we don’t mean Superman! Although, Superman is a great segue-way considering Clark Kent has his own canine companion. Just as Superman (and Supergirl) spend their days with their furry friend Krypto the Super-Dog, Batman keeps Ace the Bat-Hound around. Batarangs make great fetch fodder, after all. And criminals make the best chew toys…

If you’re unfamiliar with Ace, you’re not alone. DC’s dogs have come in and out of the spotlight over the years. Their pop culture popularity increased after the animated film DC League of Super-Pets (2022), however. Now, everyone wants to see their favorite hero with a pet. And to celebrate Batman Day, we’re specifically celebrating Bruce Wayne’s best boy: Ace!

Ace the Bat-Hound debuted in Batman #92.

Super hero pets used to be way more common. They were allies and companions to the main heroes. In 1955, Ace debuted as the Dynamic Duo’s crimefighting partner. His look and demeanor were both inspired by detective films and serials such as Rin Tin Tin and Ace the Wonder Dog. Ace’s original comic origin places him as John Wilker’s pet. After Batman and Robin use Ace to locate the missing man, Wilker actually offers the dog to Bruce Wayne. Ace even gets his own hood to keep his “identity” a secret, since Bruce worries the dog is too recognizable as both his and Batman’s.

In 1964, a comic editor named Julius Schwartz insisted DC get a little more serious. Instituting a “New Look” across the board for Batman, Schwartz asked writers to remove “sillier” elements in the series. Ace the Bat-Hound was one of them. But this good boy has survived in the fan consciousness. After his disappearance from the comics, he finally found his way back in DC Rebirth — after a couple attempts to use an English Mastiff and Great Dane in his place post-Crisis and during The New 52.

A “hound,” by definition, is a dog belonging to the hunting breed categories. This includes scent and sight hounds. German Shepherds aren’t either. They actually belong to the herding group, which also means that Ace is not really a hound. Of course, we can’t deny that “Bat-Hound” has a nice ring to it. And “Bat-Shepherd” is a mouthful.

Shepherds are often aloof and slightly stubborn. Owners must earn their loyalty, and train them very well to keep them in line. They are dogs with bountiful energy and, like all herders, need a challenge and enjoy being put to work. In our society, we see German Shepherds in law enforcement and entertainment work. Making Batman’s dog a German Shepherd was a stroke of pure genius, then!

His Rebirth origin story is perfect for the Modern Age.

Like most super heroes, Ace has gone through various origin story shifts and rewrites. His most recent one is perhaps the best yet. Fair warning — the story itself is absolutely a tearjerker. It takes cues from rescue stories in our own reality, since dog fighting is still a very common sport around the world. If you weren’t convinced The Joker was a truly vile villain, let his treatment of Ace and other dogs be the final indication.

In Urban Legends, Ace is being used as a fighting dog in one of The Joker’s rings. Batman and Robin discover Ace in a cage, and the dog is aggressive and seemingly beyond saving. Still, Batman takes a chance on him. Eventually, Ace learns only to bite his new dad’s enemies. Plus, he gets an adorable utility vest and hood for his missions in Gotham City.
