Massive, ferocious, and … domesticated? Sometimes even cute? Rancors contain multitudes in their multiple appearances throughout Star Wars™ film and television.
Since that first showdown with Luke Skywalker in Jabba’s Palace during Return of the Jedi™, Rancors have captured the imaginations of countless Star Wars fans. Thanks to various TV series, we now have more insight into these complex creatures.
Where Are Rancors From?
- Rancor Homeworld: Dathomir
- Species Classification: Reptilian
Originally, the Rancor species was from Dathomir — the same planet as Maul, Asajj Ventress, and the Nightsisters. Among the various types and subspecies, color variation does occur in their thick reptilian hides. Since they’re also found on Felucia, it appears that Rancors thrive in swampy environments, filled with humid air and vegetation (and plenty of prey to feast on). However, famously, a Rancor lived beneath Jabba the Hutt’s Tatooine palace. More on him below.
While these semi-sentient beasts seem like pure malice at first, it really depends on their training. Any Rancor that’s not found in the wild requires a Rancor Keeper. When bonded with their keeper, Rancors are exceedingly loyal creatures. In fact, as seen during The Clone Wars™, Rancors were completely domesticated on the jungle world of Felucia. They coexisted alongside Felucians and other residents of the planet.
How Tall Are Rancors?
Still, even with training, a fully grown Rancor is quite intimidating. Armed with razor sharp teeth and talons, some Rancors are even covered in spines. At 5 meters tall (16 feet), these beasts tower above most humanoids. And if you get too close, you might even get drenched in drool.
Who Are the Most Famous Rancors?
- Rancor Appearances: Return of the Jedi, The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Commander™ video game, The Book of Boba Fett™, The Bad Batch™
- Rancor Fan Fact: In the 2016 novel Aftermath: Life Debt™ by Chuck Wendig, the name of Jabba the Hutt’s Rancor is revealed to be Pateesa — Huttese for “friend”
Of all the known Rancors, Jabba the Hutt’s pet is probably the most (in)famous. She was a gift to Jabba the Hutt from his majordomo, Bib Fortuna. The crimelord kept this creature in a subterranean lair directly below his throne. Should anyone disappoint or upset him, Jabba could immediately send them down to their inevitable doom. This particular Rancor also came with a human keeper called Malakili.
However, Jabba’s not the only significant owner of a Rancor. In The Book of Boba Fett, the bounty hunter also came to possess his own Rancor, which proved pivotal in the battle for control of Mos Espa.
Earlier in galactic history, the Bad Batch also came into contact with a young Rancor named Muchi. Though already extremely strong, Muchi was also pretty adorable. She’s just a baby.
So, would you want to own a pet Rancor?
