The Fantastic Four: First Steps

“Our city, our planet, owes a debt to these intrepid souls. And while we can never repay them, we can certainly celebrate them.”

Marvel’s First Family is finally making its way to the big screen — and the impact will no doubt have far-reaching results. Reed Richards, AKA Mister Fantastic, is played by Pedro Pascal and Sue Storm, AKA Invisible Woman, is played by Vanessa Kirby. Rounding out their super hero quartet is Johnny Storm, AKA Human Torch, played by Joseph Quinn, and Ben Grimm, AKA The Thing, played by Eben Moss-Bachrach.

As shown by their scenes together, these four cosmically enhanced heroes have an effortless family dynamic. There’s jokes, there’s secrets, and a deep dedication to protecting each other. We see each of them using their unique powers, including Mister Fantastic’s stretching abilities. This official trailer also shows more footage of H.E.R.B.I.E., the family’s domestic robot, as well as the Fantasti-Car. Everything in the film is done in a retro-futuristic, 1960s visual style, and it’s directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision).

First Glimpse of the Silver Surfer

“Your planet is now marked for death.”

We’ve known for a while that the Fantastic Four will be facing Galactus (played by Ralph Ineson) as well as his Herald. Though the Silver Surfer might look a little different (played by Julia Garner), she brings the same foreboding message of planetary doom. Together, these two dangerous figures travel the cosmos searching for worlds that Galactus can devour.

Aside from the villains, one of the most interesting aspects of the trailer is the public’s reaction to the Fantastic Four. Elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve seen fear, distrust, and even legislation go up against super heroes. But it seems like the world recognizes a need for the Fantastic Four, even before Galactus appears. How did they win over the public following their flight to space? All will be revealed this summer.

Whose First Steps Are We Talking About?

“We can do this. Nothing’s going to change.”

Now, about those first steps. The official trailer confirms that Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic are expecting! In the comics, these two are parents to Valeria and Franklin Richards. Valeria is a genius who shares a close relationship with Doctor Doom, while Franklin has reality manipulation powers. Which child could be on the way? Yet another mystery for this highly anticipated MCU debut.

Of course, the trailer also teases two gigantic feet marching through a city’s streets. Most likely they belong to Galactus, and the ending image is certainly a cheeky reference to the film’s title. But it’s no secret that this movie will forever change the Marvel Multiverse — not if all those formulas on Reed’s chalkboard have anything to say about it.
