Horror and comedy are two sides of the same coin. They both involve a raising of stakes and tension, and then a release. Whether that’s through laughter, tears, or screams is up to the genre. Then again, there are plenty of genre crossovers that rely on both. That’s how we end up with movies and television that are goofy but grim and eerily eccentric. These projects are also usually filled with creepy charmers like Art the Clown from Terrifier (2016) or terrible tricksters such as Sam from Trick ‘r Treat (2007).
Silly and spooky is such a sweet spot during Halloween season. So sit back and settle in for a gleefully gory list of the funniest, freakiest fictional heroes and villains in horror. Did your favorite freak secure a spot on this coveted list?
Comedic horror characters:
- Wednesday Addams
- Ash Williams
- Beetlejuice
- Elvira
- Pennywise
- Leprechaun
- M3GAN
Wednesday Addams
- Debut Movie/Show: The Addams Family
- Release Date: 1964
- Played By: Lisa Loring, Christina Ricci, Krysta Rodriquez, Rachel Potter, Jenna Ortega
- Famous Quote: “This is my costume. I’m a homicidal maniac. They look just like everyone else.”
She’s creepy and she’s kooky! Wednesday Addams has a deadpan delivery and dry wit that tickles our haunted hearts. No matter the iteration, this unsettling and strange young woman puts the laughter in slaughter.
Ash Williams
- Debut Movie/Show: The Evil Dead
- Release Date: 1981
- Played By: Bruce Campbell
- Famous Quote: “Groovy.”
Bruce Campbell is one of the leaders in over-the-top and outlandish horror performances. As Ash Williams, it just works. He’s manic one moment, a calm action hero the next. And maybe we’re all the freaks for loving when he’s covered head-to-chainsaw-arm in blood…
Beetlejuice
- Debut Movie/Show: Beetlejuice
- Release Date: 1988
- Played By: Michael Keaton
- Famous Quote: “It’s showtime!”
He’s the ghost with the most for a reason. Beetlejuice is obnoxious and unflattering, yet sometimes irresistible. We’ll blame (or thank) actor Michael Keaton for that, because when he’s movin’ and groovin’, who wouldn’t want to pop on a frilly red dress and say “I do?”
Elvira
- Debut Movie/Show: Elvira Mistress of the Dark
- Release Date: 1988
- Played By: Cassandra Peterson
- Famous Quote: [when asked how her head is] “I haven’t had any complaints yet.”
Snap, clap, and throw on some glitter in honor of Mother. Elvira’s ostentatious and hyper-femme, hyper-sexual presence is like a love letter to women and the queer community — especially drag performers — everywhere. So let your freak flag fly, because Elvira will slay whoever tells you to sit down or shut up.
Pennywise
- Debut Movie/Show: Stephen King’s IT
- Release Date: 1990
- Played By: Tim Curry, Bill Skarsgård
- Famous Quote: “We all float down here.”
Clowns are a contentious category of performer and character. Some people hate them, while others adore their large shoes and colorful costumes. The shapeshifting, dancing monster Pennywise further muddies the Derry sewer water. But who can truly hate this balloon-wielding weirdo when he giggles and makes kids laugh?
Leprechaun
- Debut Movie/Show: Leprechaun
- Release Date: 1993
- Played By: Warwick Davis
- Famous Quote: “Try as they will, and try as they might, who steals me gold won’t live through the night.”
Leprechaun is a cult classic for a reason — and that’s the movie’s staggeringly disturbing lead villain. This ’90s horror installment embraces the stupid side of creepy-crawlies, never taking itself too seriously while still offering some shock-value scares. You’ll be clutching your stomach from either upchucking or chuckles, guaranteed.
M3GAN
- Debut Movie/Show: M3GAN
- Release Date: 2022
- Played By: Amie Donald
- Famous Quote: “I have a new primary user now: Me.”
M3GAN is newer to the horror-comedy roster, but she’s already a fan favorite. This intelligent, sarcastic, and sadistic living doll will make you go LOL even as you flee her dangerous dance routine. She’s creepy and she’s cute. And she’ll be a lovable companion as long as she can stand you.
