2026 Oscar Winners: Huge Year for Horror with Sinners Sweep

As the great Moria Rose once declared, the best — and our favorite season — is Awards Season! Last night, the 98th Academy Awards dazzled audiences with impressive live performances, stunning celebrity red carpet looks, and perfect presentations. But we’re always looking forward to what matters the most: the winner announcements! And 2026 was a huge year for horror, super hero, and fantasy fans. Those were our personal highlights of the event.

It’s absolutely thrilling to see “geeky” properties get the recognition they deserve. Often viewed as lesser due to their precarious placement within genre film categories, these projects deserve just as much fanfare and attention. Sinners, Weapons, and Frankenstein help horror shine

Earlier this year, Sinners made history with a staggering amount of Oscar nominations. While most audiences didn’t expect the film to win every single award, fortunately it still won plenty. Its multiple victories have a lot of meaning beyond recognition of the film itself. By awarding Sinners best original screenplay and more, the Academy encourages creative risk-taking.

It also recognizes the efforts of POC who have historically gone un-awarded; many crew members made history last night, and many thanked the artists who paved the way before them. Each speech was hugely inspirational. Various cast members, singers, dancers, and musicians of the highest caliber also performed the Sinners original song, “I Lied to You” at the Oscars ceremony. Every moment was a love letter to the blues, hip-hop, deejaying, rock-and-roll, and every piece, part, and history of music that began within Black communities.

Frankenstein and Weapons

Of course, that’s not it for horror, either. Guillermo del Toro is well-known for his gorgeous sets and fabulous costuming. And the makeup in Frankenstein came from long days and nights spent inside studios, crafting cinematic perfection. Thankfully, Frankenstein won 3 Oscars — a massive achievement for a hardly mainstream endeavor.

Weapons also proved the horror genre is full of brutally brilliant performances. Its cast members brought nuanced acting to the screen, helping outlandish monsters feel real — and thus bringing the terror way too close to home.

Jessie Buckley stars in the latest Universal Monsters adaptation, The Bride! This genre-blending film by Maggie Gyllenhaal has Sinners vibes with a frighteningly fantastic feminist twist.

KPop Demon Hunters takes center stage

Animation is certainly an undervalued medium. Additionally, K-pop is an often stigmatized music genre. Yet Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters completely defied the odds by winning 2 Oscars this year. Amid a standing ovation, the creators accepted Best Animated Feature. Later that evening, they celebrated another well-earned victory with the song “Golden.” Played on radios everywhere, the inspirational ballad has been stuck in the heads of kids and adults alike all year. Fire and Ash proves its VFX prowess

Avatar: Fire and Ash was obviously a no-brainer for the VFX win. James Cameron’s stunning visual effects feasts are like video games come to life, showing sweeping fantasy environments, strange sci-fi worlds, and amazing action. From the motion capture acting to CGI creatures, every square inch of the screen is a true sensation when viewed as movies are meant to be seen — in the cinema. You got an even bigger visual meal if you saw Avatar in IMAX.

The notable victories don’t stop there! These actors, directors, writers, and musicians all have a hand in some of our favorite geeky films.

• Sean Penn’s performance in Mystic River (directed by Clint Eastwood) is still some of the most astounding acting of the 2000s. Equally as riveting, his embodiment of a sadistic and downright demonic villain in One Battle After Another both captivated and repulsed viewers.
• Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, and Ludwig Göransson all worked together previously on the Marvel movie Black Panther. Coogler also directed Fruitvale Station, Jordan’s debut film.
• Produced by Brad Pitt, F1 explores the cutthroat world of a massively popular racing sport. Its mighty allstars are celebrities in their own right around the globe in a high-speed, adrenaline-fueled spectacle.
