How much can a common goal make a terrible enemy trustworthy? According to the Jedi, not very much. That’s the central question of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord™, the newest Star Wars™ animated TV show.

Since his enigmatic debut in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace™, Darth Maul has fascinated audiences and eluded his enemies. His only allegiance is to himself. But now he wants an apprentice to take down the Empire.

Maul – Shadow Lord will begin streaming April 6, 2026 with a double-episode premiere. Watch the official trailer below then stick around for everything we know so far.

“The Empire tried to kill me. Their betrayal demands consequence.”

Over the years, Maul has lived many lives. He has been Darth Sidious’ Sith apprentice, a tool to help Palpatine become Emperor. Thanks to the magic of the Nightsisters, Maul defied death and returned. Then, Maul set his sights on Mandalore. With his brother Savage Oppress at his side, he used the Death Watch to take over the planet. Of course, that rule was short-lived. Once again, Maul took to the shadows.

From there, he began constructing his own criminal network, the Crimson Dawn. He no longer wishes to serve the Sith. Now, his desire for power is in direct opposition with his former Master, Emperor Palpatine. And that means he needs an apprentice to help him destroy the Empire and secure his own place within the galaxy.

When does Maul – Shadow Lord take place?

“The Empire may be our common enemy … but Maul will never be our ally.”

The Star Wars canon timeline spans multiple eras, starting with The Old Republic, when the Jedi were created to protect the Republic from the emerging Sith. Then, The High Republic is the Republic’s peak of peace and prosperity. But then the Fall of the Jedi (episodes I, II, and III) brings about the Reign of the Empire.

And that’s when Maul – Shadow Lord takes place. It’s an especially difficult time for Maul himself. He’s no longer Darth Sidious’ prized apprentice. In fact, that’s fueling Maul’s desire to build his criminal underworld. Maul – Shadow Lord occurs during the reign of the Galactic Empire, following Star Wars: The Clone Wars™ but before Solo: A Star Wars Story™ and Star Wars: Rebels™.

Who is in Maul – Shadow Lord?

“We’re not gonna take out the whole Empire.”

Sam Witwer returns as Maul, the Dathomirian warrior hellbent on revenge. Gideon Adlon is Devon Izara, the Twi’lek Jedi Padawan who is the target of Maul’s plan. Together, he believes they can take out the Empire. It feels tragically similar to when he tried to get Ahsoka Tano over to his side — but will Devon resist like Ahsoka?

Oscar-nominated Wagner Moura will play Commander Brander Lawson, who operates on Janix, the same planet where Maul hopes to restart his criminal syndicate. Richard Ayoade will play Lawson’s droid, Two-Boots, and Dennis Haysbert is Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki, who tries to appeal to Devon’s Jedi training. A.J. LoCascio (who also voices Gambit on X-Men ’97) will play a character first seen in Ahsoka™, the mysterious Marrok.
