Guardians of the Galaxy- The Green Team
In pulp science fiction, aliens have often been considered “little green men from space”. They come from beyond our stars, in flying saucers and spaceships to make contact with Earthlings.
Marvel’s spacefaring team, the Guardians of the Galaxy, have had quite a few of these green alien members on the roster over the course of the comic’s history. We have already seen a few of these members in the movies, while some have only appeared in the comics so far. Here is a breakdown of some of the lean, green fighting machines who have been official Guardians of the Galaxy.
This Guardian will make her MCU debut with Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2. Mantis is an expert martial artist who also has empathic abilities and accelerated healing. As a child, her father left her with the Kree Priests of Pama and with her powers she eventually joins the Guardians first as a counselor and then as an active member.
In the comics, Drax the Destroyer was resurrected from his human form to become a space champion, meant to destroy Thanos himself. In the films, he fights to avenge the death of his family at the hands of Ronan. He is recognizable by his green skin and striking red tattoos. His powers include superhuman strength and incredible knife skills.
A member of the green Skrull race of aliens, Replica possesses the power of shapeshifting. After she met the original Guardians team, she stowed away on their ship by taking the form of an insect and hiding within. Her shapeshifting powers also allowed her a slight capability to replicate the superhuman abilities of people she mimicked.
As the last living member of the Zen-Whoberis species, Gamora was adopted by Thanos after the Badoon destroyed her people. The Mad Titan trained her to become a lethal assassin in hopes that she would kill Adam Warlock. Gamora quickly earned the reputation of “deadliest woman in the galaxy” and eventually helped the Guardians to fight against Thanos.
In the comics, Bug joined the second incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the team led by Star-Lord. He was originally a character in the Micronauts series, but was recruited by Rocket Raccoon. He has a range of heightened senses, including sight and agility, and his antennae provide him a danger-sensing awareness. Bug can also cling to walls and has a green insectoid appearance.
Okay, so he’s not exactly green, but he is green if you know what we mean. Groot originally debuted as a space invader who planned to capture humans for experimental research. He was the monarch of Planet X, of the species Flora Colossus. Flora colossi language is difficult to understand due to their tree-like body composition, which leads to the repetition of the famous phrase, “I am Groot.”
The galaxy is full of strange and amazing creatures and people, and this is just a small collection of them. The Guardians of the Galaxy attract heroes of all stripes, but there’s no denying there’s a lot of green aliens out in space!
