Forever Young: How Peter Parker/Spider-Man Keeps Fandom Fun

Happy Spider-Man Day, Peter Parker! Marvel’s Peter Parker celebrates his birthday soon, on August 10 — which makes his star sign a Leo. But it’s probably for the best that he wasn’t hanging around any radioactive lions! Peter Parker is most beloved for his role as Spider-Man. This wall-crawling, web-slinging vigilante from New York City has captured the hearts and attention of comic fans around the world. Of course, that has a whole lot to do with how funny, sweet, and caring Peter is. Both when wearing the costume and not, Peter Parker has infinite compassion for the people around him.

But Peter Parker is also so universally adored because he’s so relatable and inspirational. He’s smart, but he’s the odd one out. He gets bullied, yet learns how to stand up for himself in a way that matters. No wonder he’s the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” — you really could just grab a beer (well, maybe a juice box) with him. Forever young and forever iconic, Peter Parker is truly one of the greatest super heroes of all time.

He’s a geek!

In school, Peter Parker has a reputation for being a shy bookworm. That definitely helps him keep his secret identity under wraps. Obviously, though, he’s also one of the most intelligent Marvel super heroes. Peter figures out how to use his powers all on his own, and even traces their origin to the radioactive spider that bit him. He manufacturers his own web fluid in order to fit with the Spider-sona. Many of us geeks wish we could also develop amazing abilities and use science to bolster them!

Peter Parker is 5’10”

 

How tall is Peter Parker? Surprisingly, he’s only 5’10”. This hero is an above average individual with a below average height! For reference from the comic art above, Captain America is 6’1″. Felicia Hardy, AKA Black Cat, is also 5’10”, but those heels really give her an extra boost over Peter. Perhaps Peter should implement stilettos into his costume if he wants to compete. But in all seriousness, Peter being short actually helps us relate to him. He’s not some dreamboat muscle man with unachievable proportions. He’s just a guy.

Puny Parker

Before he gets his powers, Peter Parker is also really scrawny and doesn’t have much muscle mass. His tormenters call him “puny Parker,” which is a reference to his stature as well as his insecurity. People can be really cruel with those high school nicknames, huh? Anyway, while some comics depict Peter as gaining strength with his spider bite, he doesn’t get any taller. When did being tall ever help you save the world, though? If anything, Peter’s height probably helps him squeeze through smaller spaces. Other bug heroes such as Ant-Man and Wasp can take care of the really puny places, though.

Teenage Dream

Student, photographer, scientist. Peter Parker cycles through different stages in his life, somehow always rotating around those three. In his teenage years, Peter Parker attends high school and becomes the super hero Spider-Man. As he gets older, he finds a part time job at the Daily Bugle and sells photographs of Spider-Man to make a living. Later in life, Peter Parker goes to college and fulfills his dream of becoming a scientist. And he still finds time to save the day — or save the entire Spider-Verse! Then, the cycle resets, and Peter Parker never truly grows up. Well, unless you count the fan-favorite divorced and downtrodden Peter B. Parker from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Readers have mixed feelings about this “forever young” Peter Parker. But that’s what parallel universes, one-offs, and new continuities are for! Peter Parker can become an adult, get married, have kids, et cetera. Then, he can go back to being our young, quippy kid with big dreams. Peter Parker is so important to newer, younger generations of comic (and comic book movie) lovers.

With great power…

From fighting back against bullies to facing family tragedy, Peter can lead teens by example. He can reach out from within the panels and help teenagers feel heard and seen. Maybe they aren’t experiencing a surge of abilities from a Spider Totem. But they’re going through something difficult. Thankfully, Peter Parker has been there, done that, all while balancing imbalanced hormones from puberty.

Of course, superhuman abilities are a lot for a 15 year old to shoulder. Peter Parker is burdened at an early age with great responsibility. However, he’s a resilient person at his core, with a strong moral code and innate sense of justice. When he lost Uncle Ben, he swore to make society a better place. Ultimately, Peter Parker stands for the optimistic hope of a brighter future. Also, he looks pretty cool in his suit, even with the big bug eyes. That’s the teenage dream right there.
