Jester’s 5 Most Chaotic Moments in Critical Role Campaign 2
Jester Lavorre is undoubtedly the most random and unpredictable member of the Mighty Nein, cementing herself as one of the overall fan favorites in the process. Wherever she goes, she encourages everyone to open their hearts to chaos and enjoy the journey of life.
Though the method to her madness might not always be evident, Jester’s magical abilities and fun-loving spirit have some of the most powerful influence on the party and the people around her. Join us below as we break down her 5 most chaotic moments from Critical Role Campaign 2.
5. Trying to revive an unconscious child with a doughnut
Jester is technically — technically — the party’s healer. But she came into that role a bit hesitantly. In the early days of the Mighty Nein’s adventures, she didn’t even have her own medical kit. Yet she’s the one with healing magic! Yeah — Beau was just as surprised as you are.
Still, Jester does her best. She improvises, as we’ve come to expect. In one such instance, the Mighty Nein finds an unconscious child. Jester’s first instinct is to try to revive him … with a doughnut. Characteristically, Jester is pretty adamant about the power of the pastry. When that doesn’t work, however, the proper kit suffices.
4. Lying to get Ulog into the Tri-Spires
In Zadash, Jester rents a room in the upper-class district known as the Tri-Spires. None of her companions can afford the rate, nor do their physical appearances meet the district’s standards. Thus, when the party need to sneak in for some midnight espionage, they have to get creative — especially because they have to smuggle in the plain, rough-mannered dwarf named Ulog.
Jester devises a small trick. She explains to the gate guards that Ulog is a comedian. When Ulog fails to tell a funny joke, Jester insists he’s more of a physical comedian. Then she pushes him over. It’s a laugh-out-loud campaign moment that illustrates just how absurd Jester’s tactics and solutions can be.
3. Paying tribute to the Traveler in the Hearth of the Allhammer
Jester worships a trickster god called the Traveler. Most people don’t know of him and consider Jester’s beliefs heretical, as they aren’t part of the list of approved religions. That doesn’t bother Jester in the slightest. If anything, it makes her worship that much more enjoyable.
During a harvest celebration, Jester infiltrates the Hearth of the Allhammer — a lawful good deity of craft, creation, family, and legacy. Basically, this guy is the opposite of the Traveler in most aspects. Disguised as an old woman, Jester paints huge pink hearts and writes “The Traveler was here” on the hearth. She also leaves pamphlets encouraging others to follow the Traveler.
2. Hosting Traveler Con on Rumblecusp
Continuing her path of devotion to the Traveler, Jester and the Mighty Nein host an entire convention in the name of the trickster deity. The first ever Traveler Con takes place on the volcanic island of Rumblecusp, once the inhabitants there have been freed from the influence of the false god Vokodo. Jester is then appointed by the Traveler himself to arrange the festivities so that he could meet and greet his worshippers.
What follows is a full-blown celebration of chaos, complete with a bone harp solo from Yasha, illusions aplenty, and a ceremony that involves custom-made drumstick phalluses and other suggestive shapes (Jester’s favorite act of vandalism-slash-worship), plus the active volcano. When the Traveler is revealed to be an archfey named Artagan rather than a proper deity, the chaos only deepens (but so does Jester’s devotion).
1. Offering Isharnai the Blueberry Cupcake
As opposed to the pageantry and spectacle of Rumblecusp, this all-time great campaign moment proves that the most powerful chaos can come in small, concentrated doses. Plus, it reminds us that chaos isn’t always funny — and it can have a frighteningly strong impact.
In the episode “Misery Loves Company,” the party has discovered that Isharnai the hag cursed their friend Nott the Brave to become a goblin. In an effort to lift Nott’s curse, the party needs to find a suitable source of equal misery for the hag, who gleefully feeds on torment. Others are prepared to sacrifice everything they have to free their friend, but Jester offers a more delicious, devious solution.
A Little Cupcake Magic
With extremely charismatic persuasion, Jester offers half of a stale blueberry cupcake to the villain as a sort of olive branch. Only once Isharnai has eaten the treat does player Laura Bailey reveal to Matt Mercer that the cupcake was enchanted with a magical powder she previously obtained. This powder would specifically leave the hag at a disadvantage to mental magic (and make the cupcake extra sweet!).
Jester then casts a memory-modifying spell on Isharnai, persuading the hag to believe she agreed to lift the curse. Somewhat confused but otherwise convinced, Isharnai relents. Then, Jester urges the party to flee quickly before the spell’s duration wears off. Ultimately, this wild gambit successfully frees the Mighty Nein’s friend from the dark magic trapping her.
