Kevin Smith’s MOTU: Revelation Behind The Scenes

Return to the world of Eternia with a behind the scenes look at Masters of the Universe: Revelation with showrunner and Masters of the Universe superfan Kevin Smith.

Smith confirms that the show is hoping to pick up where the original series from the ’80s left off, not just with the story but with the audience. He explains that the first 10 minutes of the show will feel quite similar to the tone of the original series: a bit childish and happy and sweet (plus the animation will be updated). And then, about halfway through the episode, there’s a twist where everything changes. Those kids who watched this show in the ’80s grew up. So did the tone of this series.

Smith talks about how children connected with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. He says, “These were characters that were bathed in innocence, and in our story that innocence gets lost along the way.” As a kid, Smith felt like he had no control in his life. But when He-Man shouts, “I have the power!” every kid felt like they could have power in their lives too.

The clip explores how Masters of the Universe: Revelation is just like any superhero story with a secret identity. He says, “Prince Adam is Clark Kent, Superman is He-Man.” Kevin Smith has always been a fan of superhero stories, writing comics for characters like Daredevil, Green Arrow, Batman, and others. Now, fans will get to see another Kevin Smith superhero story with He-Man.

Kevin Smith also revealed more about the plot. The story will explore the fallout of what happens when Teela discovers the true identity of He-Man all on her own. And when it rains it pours. Her revelation is only the first of many to come. The mysteries of Castle Grayskull and secrets of Eternia are all on the table in this thrilling upcoming epic.

The series has cast Chris Wood as He-Man, Diedrich Bader as Trap Jaw, Kevin Conroy as Mer-Man, Liam Cunningham as Man-At-Arms, Susan Eisenberg as Sorceress, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela, and Mark Hamill as Skeletor.

Part 1 of Masters of the Universe: Revelation premieres on Netflix on July 23.
