Marvel Studios’ Valentine: Official Fantastic Four Casting!

After years of speculation, and even one multiversal cameo, Marvel Studios has finally announced the official cast of the upcoming Fantastic Four film. Marvel’s First Family will arrive in theaters on July 25, 2025.

In a surprise Valentine’s Day-themed announcement, Marvel confirmed that Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, Star Wars: The Mandalorian™) will play Reed Richards AKA Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby will play Sue Storm AKA Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Star Wars: Andor™, Marvel’s The Punisher) will play Ben Grimm AKA the Thing, and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) will play Johnny Storm AKA Human Torch. The Fantastic Four (2025)

Aside from the film’s release date and now the official casting, not much is known about this highly anticipated MCU adaptation. However, like the scientists within the Fantastic Four family, we can use some deductive reasoning based on clues from the official Marvel art and logo.

Based on the retro style of art and the references to space age culture (Ben Grimm’s portrait mirrors the famous Buzz Aldrin portrait) as well as the font for Marvel Studios, it would appear this story might take place in the past. Plus, the magazine the Thing is holding looks to be an homage to a famous LIFE cover featuring President Lyndon B. Johnson. That particular LIFE magazine was published in 1963.

Marvel’s Multiverse Saga

Of course, given that The Fantastic Four will be an entry in the Multiverse Saga, time and space are not much of a barrier in MCU storytelling. In fact, that could even make things more interesting for this team of scientists turned super heroes. Perhaps they were lost in space or sucked into another universe — who knows for sure, but this official art certainly promises an interesting take.

Who Is the Fantastic Four Robot?

In keeping with the mixed-up references of the Multiverse Saga, the robot at Ben Grimm’s side is H.E.R.B.I.E. This acronym stands for Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-type, Integrated Electronics. He first appeared in the second animated series for the Fantastic Four, and soon became a frequent companion of Reed and Sue’s ultra-powerful children, Franklin and Valeria.

Could that mean the youngest members of the Fantastic Four are planned for the MCU’s future?

Quick Fantastic Four History

Jack Kirby and Stan Lee created this iconic super-powered family/team, with The Fantastic Four #1 debuting in 1961. That’s two years before the Avengers and the X-Men, hence the team’s moniker Marvel’s First Family. Their history is intrinsically tied to space travel because, similar to Bruce Banner AKA the Hulk, Reed Richards and his team gained super powers because of accidental exposure to radiation.

As a result, Reed Richards gained polymorphic stretching abilities, his wife Sue could turn invisible, her brother Johnny could engulf his entire body in flames, and their friend Ben became a being made of orange rock. Though they didn’t set out to be super heroes, they soon found themselves saving the planet and eventually all universes in existence. Over time, they greatly honed their powers and knowledge of the cosmos — in particular Sue Storm, whose abilities developed into powerful force fields she could effortlessly manipulate.

Fantastic Four Enemies and Allies

Throughout their adventures, they crossed paths with Doctor Doom, a former friend of the team whose descent into dictatorship drove his thirst for absolute power. There’s no doubt he and the Fantastic Four will play an important part in the upcoming Secret Wars films. Plus, the team is often associated with other iconic Marvel characters like Galactus, Silver Surfer, and Namor.
