Hal was originally a military test pilot.

Like his father before him, Hal Jordan was a military test pilot. He was terrified of flying, and often took his fear out on his superiors, resulting in his demotion to engineer. After being abducted by his soon-to-be mentor Abin Sur, Hal accepted his newfound role as what is colloquially referred to as a “space cop” — AKA a Lantern.

Hal completed basic training on the planet Oa. Afterwards, he garnered a reputation as a powerful warrior and fierce guardian.
