Hal was originally a military test pilot.
- Abilities:Â Hand-to-hand combat, mechanical engineering, aviation
- Powers:Â Indomitable will, telepathic resistance, willpower form transformation
Like his father before him, Hal Jordan was a military test pilot. He was terrified of flying, and often took his fear out on his superiors, resulting in his demotion to engineer. Fortunately, this gave him some of the skills he needed to become a Green Lantern. After being abducted by his soon-to-be mentor Abin Sur, Hal accepted his newfound role as what is colloquially referred to as a “space cop” — AKA a Lantern.
Hal completed basic training on the planet Oa. Afterwards, he garnered a reputation as a powerful warrior and fierce guardian. He made a lifelong enemy in the traitor Sinestro, and earned himself lifelong friends in the Justice League. An honest and upright man, Hal takes pride in ensuring no evil shall ever escape his sight.
Green Lantern also helped found the Justice League.
- Justice League Founding Members:Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern,The Flash, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter
When Darkseid invaded and threatened to destroy Earth, many heroes heeded the call. Hal Jordan was among them. As Green Lantern, he fought tirelessly against ruthless alien enemies. After their hard-won victory, the heroes were inspired to form a team in case of similar future crises. They first set up base at the Secret Sanctuary. In more recent times, the teammates meet at The Tower.
Of course, Hal Jordan was not the first Green Lantern — that’s Alan Scott.
- Fun Fact: Alan Scott was never a member of the Lantern Corps.
Alan Scott is the original Green Lantern. He was Earth’s original protector, as well as a founding member of the Justice Society of America. He charged a ring made of “mystical green flame” via an actual green lantern. A closeted gay man, Alan also finally found the courage to come out decades later after paving the way for straight and queer super heroes alike.
Hal Jordan is the most legendary Green Lantern, but not the most powerful.
- Sector Assignment: Sector 2814 (includes Earth)
Part of what makes Hal Jordan so legendary is that he was the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps. Prior to Hal’s recruitment, the Corps was composed of various beings from throughout the cosmos. Notably, Earthlings were absent from this group — despite Sector 2814 (Earth and its Solar System) belonging to the 3000 known Sectors protected by Lanterns. Hal Jordan’s teacher, Abin Sur, entrusted his ring and duties to Hal. Hal’s gruff personality, combined with his strategic mind and charming exterior, won over thousands of fans.
Who is the most infamous Green Lantern?
Kyle Rayner is the most infamous Lantern. In a story starring Kyle, his girlfriend is murdered and stuffed into a fridge. All this is done for the sake of advancing Kyle’s pain and plot! Critics reference this story when utilizing the term “fridging,” which refers to sidelining or killing a female love interest simply to motivate a male hero into action.
John Stewart, Hal’s alternate, might be the most powerful.
- The Reason: John Stewart’s energy constructs are unlike any other.
Every Sector of the galaxy knows the name John Stewart. He is one of the most incredible and capable men to ever wield a Green Lantern Ring. Committed to truth and justice, he embodies the ideals not just of his own heart, but the quintessential values of the various Corps he serves.
John is the third human to wield a Green Lantern ring. Unlike his predecessors, however, John’s energy constructs are wholly unique and truly formidable components of his will. Because he studied architecture, his constructs are hard, never hollow. They also function with the actual intricacies of the item, including every minute gear within a tank.
Who is your favorite Green Lantern? If it’s Hal Jordan, do you agree with our assessment that he is not, in fact, the most powerful of the heroes with the Green Lantern name?
