POLL: Which Horror Movie Ending Shocked You the Most?

By Nick Cimarusti on Oct 14, 2025

One of the (many) appeals of horror is the way it upends all the rules. In the world of horror, tropes can be strictly followed or strictly abandoned, and figuring out where the story is going can be half the fun.

But a twist ending? That’s one horror requirement that has always endured. The final scene of a horror movie is often something that winks at the viewer or gives them one last scare. Many tack on a jumpscare, like Insidious, or leave the viewer with a terrifyingly bleak reality — Night of the Living Dead and The Blair Witch Project come to mind.

However, the truly memorable endings twist that knife a little further. They’re a shock to the senses, leaving your mouth hanging in horror and your mind racing to escape. So, what’s your favorite scary movie ending?

10 Shocking Horror Movie Endings

Horror can be very subjective. These scary selections are all my own, so let me convince you with the creepy details on why these endings are among the most shocking in horror cinema.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Psycho

A classic is a classic, and for good reason. From the piercing score to the skeleton in the cellar, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is a master class in suspense. He might not hurt a fly but Norman Bates sure did have a mother lode of issues. That reveal still stands to this day as the horror blueprint.

Carrie

Admittedly, the final shot of Carrie White’s undead hand shooting up from her untimely grave is only a jumpscare. But it gets the job done and gives justice to a girl who just wanted to enjoy her prom. Besides, couldn’t risk the consequences of not including her — best to stay on Carrie’s good side.

Friday the 13th

Just when you think the evil is finally defeated, and peace has settled across the misty morning lake, the true terror of a franchise makes his first appearance. Was it all a nightmare? It’s up to you but our first glimpse at Jason Voorhees is eternally unsettling.

Sleepaway Camp

Listen, we support women’s wrongs here. While many aspects of this cult classic film have not aged with grace, the subversive nature of this slasher flick’s killer remains burned in pop culture’s memory. Who could blame you Angela? They all had it coming.

Scream

Many slashers follow the murder mystery format, in which audiences must keep guessing at the identity of the masked killer. Scream perfected this formula with self-referential humor and a surprising reveal. It’s always the boyfriend(s).

The Sixth Sense

It’s one thing to surprise a viewer and another to absolutely shock them. Some endings make you second guess everything you just watched, picking apart every moment that could have clued you in to the reveal. M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense will always be one of the top legendary twists in the horror playbook.

Jeepers Creepers

Other films, like Jeepers Creepers, combine a bleak hopeless ending with gruesome gore. The result is a conclusion that leaves you reaching for the lights as fast as you can. Sometimes the hero doesn’t win — horror can be scary like that.

Saw

Saw inspires that jaw-clenching game that horror fans love to play — what would you do if it were you? Jigsaw’s series of tortuous traps and puzzles would be enough to unravel anyone’s sanity. But the original film’s ending really has you questioning how far you might go to escape death.

Talk to Me

Speaking of games, this party trick was probably best left in someone else’s hand. However, a group of teenagers tempts fate when they play with a gnarled, cursed hand that whisks them away into the spirit world. It always starts off as fun until, suddenly, it isn’t. And some games have permanent results.

Presence

Finally, we have another ghost story. This time, a family must grapple with a new home that challenges their fragile sense of order. Like many modern ghost TV series, such as The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, Presence plays with temporal restrictions — being undead really messes with your sense of time.

All good things must come to an end, but most horrific films end with a twist. We love an ending that keeps us thinking (or panicking) long after the credits have rolled.
