How to Train Your Dragon Series History

The Isle of Berk was once a place of conflict between Vikings and the countless different types of dragons. For many generations they clashed and fought in an ongoing war. However, thanks to the bravery and groundbreaking vision of a small Viking named Hiccup and a dreaded Night Fury dragon called Toothless, this vicious cycle was broken.

With time and effort, the Vikings and the dragons learned it was possible to coexist! Each film from the series shows how these two communities stopped fighting and embraced their differences for a more peaceful way of life.

How to Train Your Dragon

For generations, the Vikings believed brutality was the only way to defeat dragons. These monstrous creatures destroyed villages and caused endless chaos, so a strong offense seemed like the best defense. Young Vikings would even prove themselves by carving out the heart of a dragon. Hiccup, the son of Hooligan Village’s chief, would soon prepare to undertake this important rite of passage.

Hiccup has a chance encounter with a dragon after he uses unconventional means to capture the beast. But Hiccup begins to see that this dragon isn’t as fearsome as his village believes. As Hiccup continues his Dragon Training, he gets to know the dragon he found in the forest. The dragon is a Night Fury, known as the most vicious type of dragon. Over time, however, Hiccup builds trust with the dragon, even naming him Toothless. Together, they show the Vikings of Berk that not all dragons are enemies to hunt and kill.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

Life in Berk has become quite different, now that the Vikings and dragons have found peace between their communities. Five years after the first film, Hiccup continues to butt heads with his father, Stoick the Vast. Though Hiccup has proven that dragons can be allies to the Vikings, his bravery in defeating the Red Death means he’s up for a big promotion: replacing his father as chief of Hooligan Village.

Hiccup is reluctant to accept this title and wishes to continue adventuring with Toothless, despite his father’s demands. Along the way, Hiccup and Toothless learn of a dangerous conqueror named Drago Bludvist, who seeks to capture all dragons and take over the world. Soon, Hiccup and Toothless have more than just the village to worry about.

How to Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World

Hiccup and Toothless continue to develop Berk into a utopia for dragons and Vikings. Dragon Riders rescue dragons and bring them back to Berk to live in safety, although the island is quickly becoming overcrowded. In addition, a dragon hunter named Grimmel the Grisly seeks to steal Toothless for his own evil plans.

With the help of Toothless’ new companion, a female dragon dubbed Light Fury, Hiccup and Toothless must race to find a way to keep the dragons of the world safe once and for all — even if that means moving away from the Isle of Berk.
