Pokémon come in so many different shapes, sizes, and stories that it’s hard to imagine any one list being able to group them all together — but that’s exactly why the Pokédex was invented!

Sure, they have their unique types, they have their homes throughout the Pokémon regions, and they have their trainers, but this list is going to thread together just a few of the scariest Pokédex entries. That’s right. Not every one of these cute and cuddly pocket monsters is as innocent as it seems.

Let’s grab our favorite Poké Balls and explore the sometimes mysterious and sometimes horrific stories behind these deceptively adorable Pokémon found while filling up your Pokédex.

Mimikyu

It wears a rag fashioned into a Pikachu costume in an effort to look less scary. Unfortunately, the costume only makes it creepier.

There was a scientist who peeked under Mimikyu’s old rag in the name of research. The scientist died of a mysterious disease.

Mimikyu’s decision to look like a beloved Pokémon is sweet and terrifying all at once. How horrific could it be that even glancing at it once would completely shock you? Meowth once tried to remove its rag, and was practically paralyzed with fear. Yikes!

Yamask

It wanders through ruins by night, carrying a mask that’s said to have been the face it had when it was still human.

The spirit of a person from a bygone age became this Pokémon. It rambles through ruins, searching for someone who knows its face.

It is terrifying enough to see a human-like mask in the arms of a ghostly Pokémon. But knowing this mask is the face that once belonged to a person is even more frightening.

The possibility that humans can somehow turn into Pokémon in the afterlife is enough to send shivers down your spine! Would you capture Yamask in a Poké Ball knowing that it was once a trainer like you?

Phantump

After a lost child perished in the forest, their spirit possessed a tree stump, causing the spirit’s rebirth as this Pokémon.

With a voice like a human child’s, it cries out to lure adults deep into the forest, getting them lost among the trees.

Even though their origin story is chilling, there’s nothing saying that these adorable Pokémon are sinister. Certainly they’re just lonely, and want more friends! Once again, lost souls becoming Pokémon seems to be a theme hidden deep within the lore of these games.

Better bring an escape rope and a compass if you’re headed into Viridian Forest alone…

Drifloon

Perhaps seeking company, it approaches children. However, it often quickly runs away again when the children play too roughly with it.

The gathering of many souls gave rise to this Pokémon. During humid seasons, they seem to appear in abundance.

Between Phantumps and Drifloons, you have to stay away from the forests and even the sky just so you don’t get taken by Pokémon. It’s unclear just how high the Drifloon can fly, but here’s to hoping we don’t find out. They’re known for carrying children away with their string-like arms.

Cubone

When the memory of its departed mother brings it to tears, its cries echo mournfully within the skull it wears on its head.

This Pokémon wears the skull of its deceased mother. Sometimes Cubone’s dreams make it cry, but each tear Cubone sheds makes it stronger.

While this origin is more sad than scary, Cubone should not be trifled with. Cubone has turned its fear into rage, and now fights with all of its emotional power.

It’s a morbid creature with a heart of gold, and the identity of its true parentage is still a hot topic among Pokémon fans everywhere.

Spiritomb

Exactly 108 spirits gathered to become this Pokémon. Apparently there are some ill-natured spirits in the mix.

All Spiritomb’s mischief and misdeeds compelled a traveler to use a mysterious spell to bind Spiritomb to an odd keystone.

Perhaps the most terrifying thing about the Spiritomb is the implication that some traveler roaming around the world was powerful enough to bind 108 sinister spirits to a keystone.

Which leads us to ask, what magics are in the Pokémon world and how truly evil is Spiritomb? There’s no knowing what souls got tangled up in this terrifying creation.

Honedge

Honedge’s soul once belonged to a person who was killed a long time ago by the sword that makes up Honedge’s body.

The blue eye on the sword’s handguard is the true body of Honedge. With its old cloth, it drains people’s lives away.

It’s hard to imagine the terror of being vanquished by a sword, and then cursed with becoming the very weapon that lead to your demise. Perhaps that terror is what drives the Honedge to drain people’s lives.

Gourgeist

Eerie cries emanate from its body in the dead of night. The sounds are said to be the wails of spirits who are suffering in the afterlife.

In the darkness of a new-moon night, Gourgeist will come knocking. Whoever answers the door will be swept off to the afterlife.

Inexplicably, this Pokémon has a direct connection to the afterlife. It’s unclear exactly what the afterlife is in this universe, since so many souls become new Ghost type Pokémon, but whatever or however it is, the Gourgeist will take you there, wailing all the way.

Banette

It’s a stuffed toy that was thrown away and became possessed, ever searching for the one who threw it away so it can exact its revenge.

Resentment at being cast off made it spring into being. Some say that treating it well will satisfy it, and it will once more become a stuffed toy.

Banette is a toy filled with so much rage and revenge that it came to life in the form of a Pokémon. It is always hunting, and accordingly, it is always haunting. There may be nothing more terrifying, except…

Bonus: Mega Banette

Extraordinary energy amplifies its cursing power to such an extent that it can’t help but curse its own Trainer.

Mega Evolution increases its vindictiveness, and the cursing power that was held back by its zipper comes spilling out.

While Banette wants to curse its original owner (who may be long gone by now) the Mega Banette is overflowing with accursed energy. It can’t help but spill out and curse nearly everyone around them. Let that be a cautionary tale to you and your beloved toys!
