Sideshow’s Week in Geek spotlights some of the cool and exciting ways we share our style as fans on and off the clock.  This week- Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe!

Sideshow staff member DK is a big fan of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics. Recently, Vertigo Comics announced a new series of Sandman books, called the Sandman Universe, and you can pick up the first of these- The Dreaming #1- at your local comic shop for New Comic Book Day today!  We asked DK to share her experience with this acclaimed series of dazzling, dreamlike comics, excitement for the new books, and more!

When did you first begin reading Sandman?

I first started reading Sandman when I was in high school. I had just finished reading Dave McKean’s visual master piece, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth and I was drawn to the covers of the Sandman Omnibuses. I just re-read the original Sandman series with anticipation of the new series coming out, and I realized I probably shouldn’t have been reading it when I was 15 years old. It’s way darker than I remember and so much went over my head!

What do you love about the world of Sandman Comics?

First and foremost, I love that even the Endless are so very human. They have their flaws and vices along with every being in the Sandman universe. I also marvel at the stories and concepts that Gaiman explores in Sandman. Everything comes full circle in the character-driven journeys he takes you through. Every character thoughtfully crafted, every setting layered with meaning; it’s truly a multi-course meal that you have to savor to understand.

Do you have a favorite character?

Well— I know he’s not very nice sometimes, but my favorite character has to be Morpheus. He’s such a cool character. I’m obsessed with his ever-changing style and choices. I also have a thing for the tragic and intimidating guys. (*cough* don’t get me started on Severus Snape! *cough*)

Which of the new Sandman Universe books do you hope to pick up?

I’m so excited for all of the new Sandman Universe content coming out. I was beside myself when Sandman: Overture came out, but Sandman Universe is a completely different beast. I can’t wait to learn what Lucien has going on in The Dreaming, what Lucifer is up to these days in his name-sake series, and where the heck the writers are going to take us in House of Whispers and the Books of Magic?! Needless to say, I’m very happy.

Any fun facts/other information you’d like to share?

Being drawn to Sandman via Dave McKean’s unconventional cover art, I don’t know if people are aware of the way he goes about making art. His technique is absolutely beautiful (can you tell I have an art-crush?). He’s not just drawing on a paper—no, he’s sculpting and collaging, then photographing, then painting and drawing on top of that, and then digitally manipulating and everything in-between. The result is a window into dreamy and dark world you’ve never seen or even imagined before!

Big thanks to DK for sharing her Sandman fandom with us! We certainly hope this new series of comics is Endless fun.  And that’s Sideshow’s Week in Geek!
