Simon Kinberg to direct Dark Phoenix; Lawrence, Fassbender, and McAvoy set to return.
It looks like long time X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will get his first chance in the director’s chair with X-Men: Dark Phoenix based on the 1980’s comic book storyline. Fox reported the news earlier today along with a release date of November 2, 2018, for the film.
We knew Sophie Turner would be back as Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix, but Fox also announced the return of Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy along with Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Alexandra Shipp.
We’ve also learned that Jessica Chastain is in talks to play Lilandra, the film’s villain, who is out to capture and kill the Phoenix Force. There’s a rumor that Angelina Jolie is also being considered for the role.
Given the popularity of the Dark Phoenix storyline and the reception to X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, which loosely adapted the story, here’s hoping Kinberg and the current cast can give fans the Dark Phoenix they’ve been waiting for.
