DC’s Special Sneak Peek at the New Superman (and Krypto!)

By Jasmine Edwards on Apr 3, 2025

Look up! DC just revealed a new Superman sneak peek. Set to soar into theaters this summer on July 11, James Gunn’s fresh take on this iconic super hero is filled with the director’s signature style — that is to say, lots of humor and heart. Fans got an extended look at the movie during CinemaCon.

Now, ahead of the trailer playing before Minecraft this weekend, DC, James Gunn, and Warner Bros. dropped the full video online. Check it out now! Then, read on below for our breakdown.

Krypto is such a good boy

Ever since James Gunn revealed that Krypto is a mutt, not a perfect purebred, we’ve been enamored with the pup. Now we’re even more in love. The Superman sneak peek opens with a bloodied and injured Superman (David Corenswet) crash landing in the snow. When he whistles for Krypto, the super dog comes running. But Krypto just wants to play! He jumps on, bites, and adds plenty more pain for his owner until Clark extends his cape for the taking. Getting dragged across the icy environment probably doesn’t feel great, but it’s better than paw-shaped bruises on your ribcage.

Hey, these robots sound familiar…

As Superman and Krypto run, the Fortress of Solitude appears. Krypto’s commanding bark opens the doors. Multiple automata rescue their master. They are numbered, and 4 seems to be the head honcho of the bunch. That’s unmistakably Alan Tudyk. You probably know Alan from his prior droid days, giving sass and class to K-2SO in Star Wars: Rogue One™ and Andor™. A quick one-liner reveals that Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy) also steals a cameo as one of these mechanical helpers.

After a “healthy dose of yellow sun,” Superman is revived and ready to save the day. By the looks of the following montage, he sure needs his strength up.

What can we expect from Superman?

Honestly, we can expect a lot. James Gunn is known for packing a lot of story into a single runtime. His excellent pacing and character-driven plots keep your eyes glued to the screen no matter the film’s length. In this trailer, we see Superman contend with a giant, fire-breathing monster. He also saves a young child from falling debris, has a heart-to-heart with Jonathan Kent, and pushes through city crowds toward his civilian job at the Daily Planet.

Most notably, the trailer includes a scene of another child planting a yellow flag with a painted-on red “S” symbol. He calls out for Superman — we expect the hero will answer. As the official synopsis confirms, this movie delivers “a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

Leading ladies and Lex Luthor

Everyone looks absolutely amazing. Here we see Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and the costume is comics-accurate and gorgeous. Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane fits perfectly into the landscape of her office, and she and Clark make a very handsome pair in their romantic scenes (which seem plentiful). You can also spy Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Plus, Nicholas Hoult makes a compelling and calculating Lex Luthor. From the scenes which imply he’s keeping Superman captive to the close-ups of him holding a gun, and later crying, we’re interested to see his arc.

Which other DC characters appear in Superman?

But wait, there’s more! Mr. Terrific/Michael Holt is the third smartest man in the world. He’s making great use of his technology in the trailer, protecting a woman who appears to be Lois Lane. But she’s hiding her face, so who can be sure? We also see Rex Mason/Metamorpho. Metamorpho is an “element man” who can change his body into any known element. Finally, Nathan Fillion appears as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern — rocking an extremely unique hairstyle and a scowl. Uh-oh, looks like the Justice League isn’t quite united yet.

Buildings fall, heroes rise, and love conquers all. The Superman sneak peek is an incredible reminder of what can come out of the genre when you embrace the absurd with sincerity and sensitivity. Idealism is back in style for summer, geeks. We can’t wait for July 11.

How hype are you for the new Superman? We can easily say that this sneak peek has skyrocketed our already high expectations and excitement for the DC film. Share your thoughts at side.show/geekgroup or in the Sideshow Social Network. And as always, don’t forget to Let Your Geek Sideshow!
