Spider-Man at the Movies: Ranking Spidey’s 5 Summer Hits

The New York City air isn’t the only sticky thing hanging around during the summer. Swinging between skyscrapers and across rooftops, you can often find the friendly, neighborhood hero known as Spider-Man wall-crawling every which way between June and August. In fact, this summer, his latest big-screen adventure Spider-Man: Brand New Day will swing into theaters on July 31, 2026.

Ahead of this next Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, and as summer officially kicks off, let’s look back the opening weekend box office numbers for all of Spider-Man’s sizzling summer blockbuster premieres. Well, actually, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 3, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 all came out in May, while Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse were both December releases. But five others hit the big screen during summer:

5. The Amazing Spider-Man

• Release Date: July 3, 2012
• Opening Box Office: $62,004,688
• Director: Marc Webb

As the middle child of the three Peter Parker Spider-Man trilogies, The Amazing Spider-Man could be easy to overlook. Yet there’s so much that this adaptation and its sequel get right — including that infamous Gwen Stacy rescue. But before that, The Amazing Spider-Man capitalizes on Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone’s magnetic chemistry, plus there’s the iconic Stan Lee cameo scene in the library.

The film also taps into Peter’s parents’ backgrounds, as well as a clever Dr. Curt Connors tie-in. Garfield captures Spider-Man’s awkward, lanky, yet somehow graceful arachnid physicality and his constant mid-fight jabbering. Nearly every fight has him poking fun at enemies while also flinging himself through the air like only a Spider-Man could.

4. Spider-Man 2

• Director: Sam Raimi

Many fans hail Spider-Man 2 as one of the best comic book movies of all time. It’s filled with early-2000s nostalgia as well as epic showdowns between Doc Ock and Spidey. With Danny Elfman’s score and Sam Raimi’s unique directing sensibilities, the result is a time capsule of super hero film filled with fun cameos and genre-defining moments.

Spider-Man 2 further establishes the heartache of Peter and Mary Jane’s push and pull romance while also utilizing the city itself as a major presence in the story. We see New York City rally around its favorite hero, especially when Spider-Man needs it the most. The train scene is nearly impossible to watch without being moved to tears and realizing the important place that super heroes occupy in our collective consciousness.

3. Spider-Man: Far from Home

After Thanos’ Snap, the entire world is readjusting. Despite mourning the loss of Tony Stark, Peter Parker must move on and what better way than a class field trip? In addition to Peter and friends’ adventures across Europe, Far from Home also has far-reaching effects for Spider-Man’s place in the MCU.

With the first live-action appearance of Mysterio, Peter’s entire world is turned upside down but not in the way he’s used to hanging. As his identity is revealed to the world, Peter Parker must grapple with being Spider-Man publicly — a dilemma which causes him to disrupt the Multiverse in No Way Home and directly leads into the events of Brand New Day.

2. Spider-Man: Homecoming

This film marked Spider-Man’s official solo entry into the MCU, after his debut in Captain America: Civil War. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man personifies teenage Peter Parker’s sense of wonder with the super hero world around him. He’s a wisecracking high school genius who gets caught up in Avengers antics, plus his own heroic adventures.

As with other MCU adaptations, this version of Spider-Man is altered to fit into the larger cinematic universe’s stories. However, Spider-Man’s MCU films are also known for introducing major concepts to the MCU, such as the Multiverse, the inclusion of Netflix’s street level heroes, and perhaps a new type of character altogether in Brand New Day.

1. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

• Directors: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson

Just like its predecessor, Into the Spider-Verse, this movie took theaters by storm. Led by Miles Morales, Across the Spider-Verse continues this Spider-Man’s foray into understanding (and fixing) the Multiverse. Accompanied by Ghost-Spider and a whole host of other Spider-Heroes, Morales has to go up against Spider-Man 2099. It’s a powerhouse cast with breathtaking visuals, and won multiple awards for good reason.
