Powerful Star Wars Legends Figures and Their Lore

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there were countless stories to tell about every planet in every star system. From the moment Luke Skywalker stepped onscreen, he inspired limitless potential in comics, books, and even video games. Star Wars flourished in every medium. And before it was streamlined into a single, cohesive canon universe, its lore was vast and infinite.

While many of these characters and narratives are no longer officially part of Star Wars, they live on in the hearts and minds of fans. Indeed, in some rare cases, they’ve even been teased as part of canon. Learn about some of the most significant extended-universe Star Wars figures below — and how they have been, or could be, introduced now.

Malgus

• Main appearance(s): The Old Republic
• Original name: Veradun

Although he kept the “Darth” title, Darth Malgus was not a Sith at the end of his story. He was, at the beginning, born Veradun, but changed his name when he attended the Sith Academy. A violent and murderous being, Malgus quickly rose through the ranks as his power increased. He served as a commander of the Imperial Military in the Great Galactic War as well as the Third Galactic War. Eventually, Malgus also killed his lover, the Twi’lek Eleena Daru, to prove he had no attachments or weaknesses.

Yet Malgus also became disillusioned with the land-hungry, warmongering Sith ideals. He hated following orders, and detested feeling out of control of his own destiny. So, Malgus broke free of his restraints, going rogue and relinquishing all ties to anything except the dark side. In many ways, Darth Maul — who later only went by Maul — followed in this character’s footsteps when he eschewed all Orders or covens.

Revan

• Main appearance(s): Knights of the Old Republic
• Original name: Revan

Darth Revan is actually the most canonical of the Legends figures. He was mentioned in The Rise of Skywalker as an ancient Sith Lord. The Sith Eternal army’s Revan Legion clearly took on his namesake, and Sith cultists on the planet Exegol could be heard repeatedly chanting “Revan”. During the war between the First Order and the Resistance, Sith trooper legions were named after the historical Sith Lord as well as numerically identified as per Imperial regulations.

So, what’s so special about Revan? Like many Sith, Revan was first a Jedi who broke away from the Order. However, he later experienced amnesia and returned to the light side. Reportedly, Revan confronted the “true Sith” and destroyed their leader, defying the dark side which once claimed him. Perhaps his story helped inspire the writers to put in Kylo Ren’s own return to the light as Ben Solo in The Rise of Skywalker.

Bane

• Main appearance(s): Jedi vs. Sith and Dynasty of Evil
• Original name: Dessel

Do you know the Sith’s Rule of Two? This mandates that there could be only two Sith — a Master and an Apprentice — at any given time. The rule was established by Darth Bane, who was the sole survivor of a terrible battle between the Brotherhood of Darkness and the Jedi. Intent on eliminating the Sith’s weakness, he created new guidelines and hoped the small circle of trust and power would help the Sith in its plot for the Jedi’s total downfall.

Unfortunately for Bane, we know how often Sith turn against one another. His Apprentice, Darth Zannah, overpowered and defeated him. Afterwards, the galaxy entered an era of peace and prosperity brighter and more bountiful than any other before it. Then, Darth Sidious, a practitioner of the Rule of Two, infiltrated the Republic. By orchestrating the Jedi Purge/Order 66, Sidious fulfilled Bane’s wishes and legacy.

In The Rise of Skywalker, Sidious references Bane by claiming to contain his spirit — as well as the spirits of every Sith since Bane. Additionally, Darth Bane appears as an apparition in The Clone Wars episode “Sacrifice”.

Nihilus

• Main appearance(s): Knights of the Old Republic II
• Original name: Nihilus

Undoubtedly, Darth Nihilus is one of the most fascinating Star Wars figures ever. Before reigning supreme as Dark Lord of the Sith, he participated in the annihilation of the planet Malachor. Experiencing such destruction caused Nihilus to crave Force energy. Soon, he began devouring any lifeform within his reach. After all, the Force surrounds and binds all living things. Nihilus craved that power and strength. He was hollow. A vessel. A void.

When he could not satisfy his hunger, he turned inward, creating an endless cycle of suffering and self-sustaining despair. Nihilus had to encase his spirit within his mask and armor to stay alive. He “lived” as much as he could, always searching for his next meal. Those meals being instances of mass murder, mind you. When the exiled Jedi Meetra Surik and a group of Mandalorians slew Nihilus, his soul continued on but was buried, never to resurface.

Traya

• Main appearance(s): Knights of the Old Republic II
• Original name: Kreia

Although first presented as a hero, Darth Traya is the ultimate mastermind of all evil. When she was a Jedi, she considered herself enslaved to the Force. Kreia sought to end the Force’s hold on sentient beings, devoting her time and research to a full understanding of the Force so she could destroy it. Horrified by her intentions, the Jedi exiled her. So, she trained Darth Revan and founded a new Sith Empire away from all existing Jedi or Sith.

But Darth Traya, bitter and betrayed by every one of her apprentices, always returned to her original goal and her former identity. She wanted to end the war once and for all. The Force was to blame for all suffering, she decided, as it drove both groups to fight with such fervor. Eschewing what she believed was a simple and stupid dichotomy, Kreia helped Surik defeat Nihilus and Sion. Then, she demanded Surik kill her. Sadly, Kreia’s vision of a world without the influence of the Force never came to pass. The galaxy continued to turn on itself in endless conflicts between light and dark side wielders.

Sion

• Main appearance(s): Knights of the Old Republic II
• Original name: Sion

While Nihilus was the Lord of Hunger, Darth Sion was the Lord of Pain. He achieved what was essentially immortality at the cost of eternal agony. Sion could return from certain death, but his body was placed in a constant state of decomposition and decay. Yet he was fueled by his agony, rage, and hatred, allowing the dark side of the Force to hold his fractured physical self together. His mind, clearly, was lost.

Sion helped wage war against the Jedi alongside Nihilus and Traya. However, he continued to perish and essentially drag his own corpse along. In a battle against the Jedi outcast Surik, she struck him down repeatedly. Eventually, Surik pleaded with Sion to see the error of his ways. Accepting defeat and finding peace with the idea of letting go, Sion banished the dark side and allowed himself to die.
