Who Was on the Jedi Council and Did They Survive Order 66?

The Jedi High Council, or simply the Jedi Council, was a collection of Jedi Masters representative of the Order’s ideals and highest standards. They earned the title of Master after spending their lifetimes learning the ways of the Force. Thus, as experts, these 12 Masters oversaw and trained the thousands of Knights, Padawans, and Younglings who were entrusted to the Order’s care, turning them into soldiers of peace throughout the Galactic Republic. Yet these duties could span from anything including mundane meetings to fighting on the front lines of the Clone Wars.

In the Star Wars™ prequel series — the only time in live action when the Jedi Council was active — the roster changed per movie. We hardly ever saw every Master onscreen when Anakin Skywalker visited their circular chamber high above Coruscant. But we knew who these Jedi were and what they stood for before their numbers were reduced by the Sith. Below, let’s look at the final lineup of Jedi Council members ahead of the Great Purge … and discover who actually survived Emperor Palpatine’s Order 66.

Yoda

Master Yoda was one of the most respected and powerful Jedi in the galaxy. Hundreds of years old, he guided countless Jedi, including Count Dooku, to reach their full potential. Yoda’s wisdom was unmatched. However, he disconnected from his emotional side. He only came to realize the true burden and terror of the Clone Wars when it was already too late. Although he dueled Darth Sidious, Yoda lost. He exiled himself in his grief and shame to the swamp planet Dagobah, where he later trained Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force.

Mace Windu

A lauded warrior, Mace Windu had little patience for the Senate or politics. He fought tirelessly, hated to hear complaints, and was strictly devoted to the Jedi and their traditional teachings. Mace Windu was also considered a champion of the Jedi Order for his victories in duels. The title was well-earned. Mace Windu almost singlehandedly defeated Darth Sidious. Only with Anakin Skywalker’s intervention did Mace Windu perish from a violent burst of Force lightning.

Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker was the only Jedi in history who was on the Council yet not granted the rank of Master. Additionally, Anakin took on an Apprentice — Ahsoka Tano — during the Clone Wars, yet still the Council did not promote him. Such blatant mistrust stirred deep resentment within Anakin. He turned to darker means to satisfy an anger and aggression that the Jedi Council only ever ignored or encouraged him to repress. When his feelings broke free, they did so destructively. You could even blame the Jedi for Darth Vader’s emergence.

So, did Anakin Skywalker survive Order 66? It’s complicated. His body sort of did, although it was modified beyond recognition because he suffered severe burns. However, his mind did not. Anakin completely transformed into a Sith Lord. Darth Vader carried out a ruthless genocide against the Jedi and, in doing so, erased his own identity as part of the Order.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Apprentice to Qui-Gon Jinn and Master to Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi did indeed blame himself for Anakin’s fall. In fact, he confronted Anakin on Mustafar when he discovered Anakin’s treachery. Their duel was fierce and fraught with decades of love and heartbreak. Obi-Wan realized Anakin was past redemption, however, when his Apprentice struck Padmé Amidala. So, Obi-Wan cut Anakin down, then went into hiding in order to secretly watch over Padmé and Anakin’s orphaned twins.

His escape continuously angered the Galactic Empire. Darth Vader and Darth Sidious developed a merciless tactical force of Jedi hunters called Inquisitors. These former Jedi wielded the dark side and used red Lightsabers. They hunted Obi-Wan Kenobi across Tatooine and other planets, but he evaded capture every time.

Plo Koon

Plo Koon was a skilled pilot and wise Jedi Master. He was highly respected for his calm demeanor and ability to analyze situations even in high-stress environments. Unlike many Jedi, Plo Koon cared deeply about the clone troopers under his command. Because he was so devoted to safeguarding lifeforms, Plo Koon was prone to acts of charity. He brought Ahsoka Tano to the Jedi Order when she was a toddler and looked after her. Sadly, Plo Koon perished during Order 66 when his clone wingmen shot down his starfighter.

Saesee Tiin

Described by some as “imposing,” Saesee Tiin was both a capable Lightsaber wielder and starfighter pilot. He was a vital part of the Jedi’s role in the Clone Wars because of his success in aerial combat.  Alongside other High Council members, Saesee Tiin went to capture Chancellor Palpatine for his crimes against the Republic. Unfortunately, Saesee perished in this endeavor — but he did give Mace Windu a better chance at his own confrontation with the Chancellor.

Ki-Adi-Mundi

Ki-Adi-Mundi was a Cerean who bore the telltale mark of his species, an enlarged conical cranium. He was extremely set in his ways. Convinced of the Jedi’s superiority and dominance over the Sith, he could not fathom their fall. He even called Dooku’s turn to the dark side “impossible.” Therefore, Ki-Adi-Mundi was entirely unprepared for the Purge. He died in the Outer Rim territories, shot by his clone allies.

Shaak Ti

Shaak Ti was a wise, balanced, and patient Jedi. But Shaak Ti did not even survive to fight her way out of the Purge. General Grievous killed Shaak Ti at the start of Revenge of the Sith — during a deleted scene, no less! While her screen time was brief, Shaak Ti truly impacted the future of Star Wars. Indeed, her distinct Togruta markings and makeup served as crucial guidelines for the design of Ahsoka Tano in The Clone Wars animated series. The writers also expanded Shaak Ti’s story within those episodes.

Stass Allie

Stass Allie was a Tholothian who served as a General during the Clone Wars. She led many successful campaigns against Separatists, including the rescue mission of Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Padmé on the planet Geonosis. Stass Allie survived that chaotic conflict. However, she died while driving her BARC speeder as her attending clone troopers doubled back to gun her down. Their blasters literally blew her out of the sky in a horrific display of their power and potential as the Jedi’s enemies.

Agen Kolar

Did you know that Darth Maul was not the only Zabrak in live action? Agen Kolar was a Zabrak Jedi Master. He lost his Padawan in the fighting on Geonosis. Still, Agen Kolar was a diligent General and Master who went on with his duties. When Mace Windu assembled a strike team against Chancellor Palpatine, he included Kolar in the lineup. However, Palpatine ran Kolar through with his red Lightsaber before they could arrest the duplicitous Sith.

Depa Billaba

Depa Billaba gained the rank of Master in the final years of the Galactic Republic. She served with grace and intelligence. In the live-action Star Wars movies, Depa did not have much of a role. However, The Bad Batch animated series significantly expanded her backstory, showing that she was Caleb Dume’s Master. Clones murdered Depa, although she put up an admirable fight to protect her Padawan. Caleb subsequently fled and took on the alias of Kanan Jarrus.

Kit Fisto

Renowned for his unique and somewhat carefree personality, Kit Fisto was a fan-favorite Jedi because of his green tentacled appearance. He also displayed a little bit of charming silliness on Geonosis, smiling when he forced back his droid enemies. But his happy disposition did not detract from his battle skills. Kit Fisto was intensely focused during combat and could also keep his humor in the face of relentless wartime struggle. Emperor Palpatine killed Kit Fisto, along with the rest of Mace Windu’s team, after giving Order 66.

Luminara Unduli

Lumina Unduli was a smart and capable Jedi Master. She survived Order 66. However, the newly emerged Empire captured and executed her in prison. In Star Wars: Rebels, the Empire used holograms of Luminara’s torture as well as her remains to bait Kanan Jarrus into a trap. The tactic was ruthless and disrespectful, showcasing the depths of Imperial depravity as well as their continued distaste for the Jedi. It was also a final indignity for Luminara, who had been betrayed by her own Apprentice Barriss Offee during the Clone Wars.
