Lucasfilm Releases Star Wars: The Acolyte First Trailer!

Something sinister is emerging throughout the galaxy. The era of the High Republic™ is reaching its end and a darkness seems to be creeping into the Force. Can the Jedi™ stop the dark side from gaining influence?

Star Wars: The Acolyte Trailer

“This isn’t about good or bad. This is about power … and who is allowed to use it.”

Star Wars: The Acolyte takes place about a century before Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace™. That’s why we open to lots of Padawans™ at a Jedi Temple™, because this is all happening way before the events of the Clone Wars™ that led to the Jedi Purge™. However, the Jedi — and the rampant murders of these light side users — are still the central focus. In this series, Jedi Master Sol™ (Lee Jung-jae) must investigate a series of shocking killings. He has the power of the Temple and many other Jedi by his side.

The Acolyte trailer shows Master Sol teaching younglings to look inward and focus outward. We also follow the powerful Master Indara™ (Carrie-Anne Moss), who demonstrates her prowess in combat against a masked warrior. Additional Jedi, like the Wookiee Master Kelnacca™ (Joonas Suotamo), the Jedi Knight Yord™ (Charlie Barnett), and the prodigy Master Vernestra Rwoh™ (Rebecca Henderson), appear briefly throughout the trailer. And because it’s always a hot topic: We have more lightsaber™ colors! Fans can see yellow, green, blue, orange, purple — as well as one chilling red saber.

Who Is Mae in Star Wars: The Acolyte?

Mae™ (Amanda Stenberg) is a key player in The Acolyte. She is a former apprentice, and the circumstances surrounding her departure from the Jedi have yet to be revealed. A cryptic statement from StarWars.com explains that Mae “gets swept up into a sinister mystery” that “puts her into the center of the conflict.” So did she leave the Jedi voluntarily or was she excommunicated? Most importantly, what does she know that we don’t?

In any case, we’re sure the tension and emotional intensity of her reunion with Sol will be a great driving force for the series. Especially because Sol has a new Padawan apprentice, the young but calm and mature Jecki™ (Dafne Keen).

A Galactic Battle Is Brewing

After ages of peace and prosperity, something wicked this way comes. Strife and fear brew across the galaxy. Most everyone in this trailer looks nervous — or frighteningly calm in the chaos. From the smuggler Qimir™ (Manny Jacinto) to the Witch Mother Aniseya (Jodie Turner-Smith), these characters have yet to reveal their motivations or loyalties. Since this is a prequel series to a prequel trilogy, however, we know we’ll definitely see the rise of the Sith. But who wants to help the darkness … and who wants to hinder its spread?

What Is the High Republic Era?

According to the canon Star Wars timeline, the High Republic takes place directly before the first trilogy. Two hundred years, in fact. It’s considered the peak of galactic peace — a time when democracy and the Jedi kept the entire galaxy in order.

Of course, all good things must come to an end. Even the brightest of lights cast a small shadow. Though it seems all might be well throughout the galaxy, balance in the Force always finds a way to present an opposing side. How will the scales be tipped in this ew-to-live-action era?
