The Mandalorian VFX – Innovation and Star Wars
The Star Wars franchise has been on the forefront of VFX since its inception, using models and computer generated graphics in powerful and creative ways. But Season One of The Mandalorian did something completely unexpected and wholly innovative.
ILMVFX, Lucasfilm’s visual effects and animation studio, recently released an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the VFX from Season One of The Mandalorian, revealing a powerful and immersive new technology for filming. They wanted actors to be able to actually look at the world around them, whether that be the sandy dunes of Tatooine or the forested villages of Sorgan (where The Child ate the frog!), so they built a high-tech set for indoor filming.
Using Unreal’s video game engine, the team behind The Mandalorian was able to project the digitally created backgrounds and characters onto a 20 foot tall, 270 degree semicircle LED video wall. Everything, down to the lighting, responded to the camera movement to provide the most realistic and accurate effects possible. This level of immersion creates an experience for the actors and an accuracy for an audience that would never have been possible without the incredible VFX team.
