Time to Hit Paws for the Top 10 Fictional Cats Countdown

Happy National Cat Day! Today, we’re discussing the top 10 cats in geek culture — from across books, movies, comics, television, and games. In our countdown, you’ll meet cats from Harry Potter, Alien, Saga, the MCU, and more.

During spooky season, black cats reign supreme in popular culture. But this list also includes many other kinds of cool cats and kittens. Some aren’t even from Earth! Will your favorite feline make the cut?

10. Streaky the Supercat (Action Comics)

Streaky is one of a number of super-powered animals from Action Comics, but is mostly known for being Supergirl’s pet cat. Streaky gained his powers from X-Kryptonite, created in a failed science experiment to neutralize the green ore’s deadly effects. In addition to his powers, he also got an adorable little cape, which is why Streaky soars onto our list. The CW’s Supergirl even gave him a shoutout!

9. Fluffy (Rugrats)

Every evil baby needs an equally evil pet sidekick. Is it wrong to call a baby evil? Well, maybe, but there’s no denying that Fluffy perfectly matched Angelica’s mean girl vibe on Rugrats. Whether she was terrorizing Tommy and the gang or slinking behind Angelica with that sinister sneer, Fluffy always managed to make an entrance. Good for her.

8. Cat-like Creature (BTS Webtoon)

The Cat-like Creature appears in the BTS Universe webtoon SAVE ME as well as the TOMORROW X TOGETHER webtoon THE STAR SEEKERS. This recurring antagonist is not necessarily a cat. However, she takes the shape of a fluffy white feline with heterochromia — two different colored eyes, one blue and one green. In SAVE ME, she tells Jin to find the map of the soul and puts him inside a time loop wherein his friends continuously suffer or die. In THE STAR SEEKERS, she assists the Dragon of the End in its efforts to infiltrate and destroy the world. Obviously, looks can deceive when it comes to this killer kitty!

7. Crookshanks (Harry Potter)

Yes, yes, Crookshanks is technically “half-kneazle” but that’s a magical cat, so we think he belongs. His ability to recognize humans in their animagus form helped save the day in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In fact, this ability ran so deep that Peter Pettigrew had to stun Crookshanks in order to protect himself from being discovered.

6. Salem Saberhagen (Archie Comics)

Salem was actually introduced to the Sabrina the Teenage Witch comics as an ordinary orange housecat with no powers. Following the success of the ’90s Sabrina sitcom, the sassy Salem became a former witch who had been sentenced to 100 years as a black cat as punishment for trying to take over the world. His wit is as sharp as his claws, securing Salem the #6 spot on our list.

5. Garfield (Garfield)

We couldn’t do a top cats in culture list without the cat who hates Mondays! Garfield takes a hefty bite outta spot #5 on this list, mostly because this lasagna-loving cat is just too real. Don’t we all wish we could lie around like Garfield every day of the week?

4. Jonesy (Alien)

Jonesy the ginger tomcat was kept aboard the USCSS Nostromo to control rodents aboard the ship. He and his owner Ellen Ripley were the only two to survive the Xenomorph incident, and then he also survived the 57-year cryostasis after their escape. That makes him almost 60 years old! That has to be worth something!

3. Dex-Starr (DC Comics)

We’d be remiss if we left out the darling of the DC universe, Dex-Starr. It might seem strange to call him that, being that his powers are based on rage and he has killed many a time with his Red Lantern vomit. However, the story of a Brooklyn based stray turned hero (of sorts) is one born in tragedy. So much, in fact, that it summoned the rage of the Red Lantern Corps and recruited the curious cat as a member. Now, Dex-Starr can be found searching to avenge the death of his original owner — the only being who was ever kind to him.

2. Lying Cat (Saga)

Lying Cat is a Sphynx cat from the popular Image series, Saga. While her power of lie detection comes in handy, what really gave her such a high ranking is her relationship with her companion, The Will. They have the true master/pet relationship that everyone has with their cat — no one knows who is in charge. And even though Lying Cats are always supposed to play by the rules, Lying Cat has fought thugs for The Will on several occasions.

1. Goose (Marvel)

Audiences everywhere said, “What the Flerken?” when they witnessed the full power of this orange tabby who tags along with Nick Fury. Like other entries on our cat countdown, this lil guy isn’t technically a cat. Goose is actually a Flerken, alien beings who can store anything and everything within pocket dimensions. Comes in handy for a intergalactic Avenger like Captain Marvel.

Plus, Goose is responsible for Nick Fury’s eyepatch in the MCU. Now that is what you call leaving your mark on the Marvel Universe. Goose will return in The Marvels!
