Top 10 Girl Groups in Comics By Sideshow Today, we’re celebrating some of our favorite fictional women to count down the top 10 girl groups in comics. Just in time for Galentineâs Day, weâre highlighting some of the best female friendships across Marvel, DC, Image, Archie Comics, and more. Whether theyâre delivering the daily news, rocking out, or saving the world, these girl groups are our definition of Squad Goals. 10. Female Furies Not every girl group is sugar, spice, and everything nice. The Female Furies made their debut in 1972, created by Jack Kirby. Trained by Granny Goodness, these New Gods of Apokolips are an elite strike force loyal to Darkseid. The women are strong and fearless, and often bicker with one another to establish dominance. Big Barda was the former leader, but she defected to be with Mister Miracle so the rest of the Furies were sent to kill her. These ferocious fighters all have amazingly brutal names, including Bernadeth, Stompa, Gilotina, Lashina, and Mad Harriet. 9. The Mary Janes The Mary Janes are an all-girl rock band that was started on Earth-65 by Em Jay Watson. Spider-Woman, AKA Gwen Stacy, is the drummer in the group, and the Mary Janes became famous because of a fight breaking out during one of their concerts in which Spider-Woman showed up to stop the action. The Mary Janes were briefly referenced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and also feature in the Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors animated series. Other members besides Gwen and Em Jay include Betty Brandt and Felicia Hardy (AKA Black Cat). 8. A-Force Originally formed as a limited-time team in Marvelâs Secret Wars, A-Force remained a team in the main continuity, uniting a wide variety of Marvelâs strongest female heroes. A-Force is the first all-female team of Avengers, but also included notable members of the X-Men, Runaways, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Inhumans. In Secret Wars, the series basically included every female hero, but when the team reunited in the 616, it was much smaller. Led by She-Hulk, A-Force also introduced the cosmic heroine Singularity, and the short-lived Dazzler Thor, who survived the events of Secret Wars only to succumb to the M-Pox Virus. 7. Paper Girls The Paper Girls hit the scene in their own self-titled Image Comics series from writer Brian K. Vaughan, artist Cliff Chiang, colorist Matt Wilson, and letterer Jared K. Fletcher. Taking place in the 1980s, a group of paper delivery girls in Stony Stream, Ohio, get caught in the Battle of the Ages. This series asks the question, “Should time travelers be able to change the past from the future?” The Paper Girls are constantly finding themselves displaced from the timestream, battling “Old Timers” who wage war against their ancestors and future descendants. Plus, the girls meet plenty of future versions of themselves â yeah, it’s just as crazy as it sounds. 6. Dora Milaje The Dora Milaje were first introduced in 1998 as an elite fighting force to keep the peace in Wakanda. Dora Milaje, meaning âadored ones,â were also brides-in-training for the Black Panther, picked from rival tribes. Since their incredible appearance in the Black Panther film in the MCU, comics have begun to focus more on their celebrated status as Wakandaâs all-female military force, showing the strength and diversity of these women warriors. Some of the most notable members of the Dora Milaje are Aneka and Ayo, who quit the force to become a vigilante duo called the Midnight Angels, and of course Okoye. 5. Gotham City Sirens Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn form this iconic trio made up of the most popular antiheroines in Gotham City. These are the baddest women with the biggest hearts, constantly proving time and again that they are more than the villains that the Gotham PD would have you believe. The Gotham City Sirens featured in their own comic series from 2009-2011, written by Paul Dini with art by Guillem March. Selina, Pamela, and Harley had each others’ backs in and out of trouble for a 26-issue run, all following the events of Heart of Hush, Batman R.I.P., and more! These three stellar characters still steal the hearts of comic fans everywhere with their incredible girl-gang attitude. 4. Lumberjanes The Lumberjanes are basically the cool summer camp friends we wish we could have! Mal, Ripley, Molly, April, and Jo are a group of friends at scout camp. They discover weird creatures and supernatural phenomena in the woods and form a squad to solve the mysteries and earn their merit badges. Each has their own special talents â Jo solves mathematical puzzles, April keeps the groupâs notes, Molly is a skilled archer, Mal is the strategist, and Ripley usually kicks off the adventure. Published by Boom Studios, the series was only supposed to be eight issues but has since gone on to publish over 50 issues. Theyâve earned scouting patches for puns, pulling all-nighters, making a jail break, and being excellent friends. 3. Danger Girl Operatives Abbey Chase, Sydney Savage, and Natalia Kassle are the main members of this daring group of female spies and treasure hunters. Created by J. Scott Campbell and Andy Hartnell and published by IDW, the women of Danger Girl proved so popular that what was supposed to be a seven-issue limited series quickly became an ongoing series of comics, oneshots, and other special issues. Led by a former British Secret Service Agent, Abbey, Sydney, and Natalia have been compared to the likes of James Bond and Indiana Jones for their high-profile, highly covert, and exhilarating globetrotting adventures. Danger Girl has even crossed over with other comic series like G.I. Joe, Batman, and Army of Darkness. 2. Birds of Prey Traditionally thought of as just Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress, the Birds of Prey team has actually had almost 20 different members in rotation since their debut in 1996. These women know just about everything there is to know that goes on in Gotham! With their expertise in martial arts, espionage, heroics, and intel gathering, they have taken on most of Batman’s own rogues and other villains, as well as teaming with the Suicide Squad. Longtime series writer Gail Simone described the core members as foils for one another, each providing the others with a quality or a need that they lack. By balancing each other out, the team is always supporting one another through trouble. Even though the team has briefly taken on male members and allies like Hank Hall, Wildcat, and Nightwing, the Birds of Prey are the ultimate DC Comics girl group. 1. Josie and the Pussycats Josie and the Pussycats debuted in 1962 in Archieâs Pals ânâ Gals, along with the first issue of the series Sheâs Josie. While Josie and Melody were in the series from the start, Valerie wasnât introduced until 1969. Her intro came in Josie and the Pussycats #45, the first issue that featured the new band, the leopard-print costumes, and the cat ears â and the rest was history. This iconic musical trio has featured in Archie Comics publications since ’69, and was adapted into a Hanna-Barbera cartoon in the ’70s, as well as a live-action movie, several recorded albums, and a new television adaptation as a part of the CWâs Riverdale. Josie is the sweet and level-headed leader, Melody is the bubbly comic relief, and Valerie is the creative and quick-minded friend. Despite the trio having plenty of troubles with their band and their school lives, Josie and the Pussycats are the ideal comics girl group we wish we could join.
