Upcoming 2025 DC Releases — TV, Movies, & More!

If you’re a fan of DC, you have quite the exciting year(s) ahead of you. James Gunn and Peter Safran’s co-leadership is taking off in an amazing array of new projects. As the studio ramps up to fill their streamlined and revitalized (but not totally reset) DC Universe, they’re also looking to truly bulk up how many stories they’re telling. Giving us quantity and quality? Now you’re just spoiling us!

But seriously, there’s so much going on that it may even be difficult to keep track of. Never fear! We’ve got your roundup right here. So sit back, scroll, and use this as your watchlist for the year 2025 — which is only a few months away! 🤯 That just means we get lots of super hero content soon, though. And that’s the best thing ever.

DC Universe

Just like the comics, sometimes film and television need a makeover. Often, this is done to freshen up the stories for modern audiences, as well as unravel the tangled knot that is a franchised universe that doesn’t always play by the same rules. Think of this like the New 52 or Rebirth comics initiatives, but for the silver and small screens. The DC Universe launch essentially aims to retain certain cast members and key narratives while disregarding the more convoluted (and poorly received) elements.

The goal? A “united continuity and story across live-action films and television, animation, and video games.” Projects releasing outside of the continuity — like Joker: Folie à Deux — are part of DC Elseworlds. Everything else has been planned and penned by writers who are devoted to an overarching story told through these separate projects. Plus, the DCU is divided into multiple chapters in order to really tighten that storytelling.

Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” begins in December 2024 with Creature Commandos. Then there was also Watchmen Chapter 1 on August 1. But these animated series aren’t really considered the start of everything. No, that’d actually be Superman.

Superman — July 11, 2025

Hold onto your capes! Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is considered by Gunn and Safran to be the “true beginning” of this new DCU. It is based on All-Star Superman. And it is not an origin story. Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Superman follows the young hero as he attempts to reconcile his human and alien heritage.

The film also features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Additional characters from the DCU, including Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), and members of The Authority such as Angela Spica/The Engineer (Gabriela de Faría) are also set to appear or debut in Superman.

The Batman Part II — October 26, 2025

The Batman Part II is a highly anticipated follow-up to a gritty take on a young Dark Knight. Of course, The Batman Part II is also part of DC Elseworlds. It ties into The Batman (2022) as well as the live-action Max original miniseries The Penguin. Director Matt Reeves is clearly taking great care to create connecting tissue between the projects. Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, but we have no other plot details at this time. Perhaps we’ll see some setup in The Penguin finale on November 10.

Birds of Prey: The Origins — November 4, 2025

But hey, DC isn’t just film and TV. Sara Shepherd, NYT best-selling writer of Pretty Little Liars, makes her DC debut with the graphic novel Birds of Prey: The Origins. This is a tale of four fantastic heroines. Set at a prep school, it’s mysterious and mystical. It’s spooky and suspenseful. This thriller, with art by Stephanie Pepper, is a can’t-miss graphic novel featuring your favorite Gotham City gals. Harley Quinn, Barbara Gordon, Helena Bertinelli, and Dinah Lance round out this all-female ensemble, sure to fright and delight alike.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow — June 26, 2026

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow continues with the main DC Universe. As is the case with the new DCU projects, Supergirl is based on a specific comic book run. The sci-fi film is a dark tale told about the jaded Kara Zor-El, who grew up on a desolate chunk of her destroyed home planet. Craig Gillespie directs and Milly Alcock stars in this adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s widely adored comic book series.

DC Film & TV To Be Announced

Most notably, Gunn and Safran want to eschew the need for specific release dates. They feel it’s best to finalize scripts and stories instead of rushing them to meet deadlines. The co-creators want to release two films and two series per year. Anything listed below could be potentially released in 2025, or is slated to, but we’re still awaiting information about most of these projects.

The Sandman Season 2

As a reminder, The Sandman is not part of the overarching DC Universe — or even Elseworlds, for that matter. However, the characters still somewhat belong to the label because they emerged from Vertigo. So, after a breathtaking first season, this epic tale is back for more. It will start with the Season of Mists storyline, wherein Morpheus’ (Tom Sturridge) past with Hell comes back to haunt him. The Sandman season 2 will hit Netflix sometime in 2025, but there’s no specific release date yet. All we can do is dream of one…

Peacemaker Season 2

Get ready to eat peace! Peacemaker season 2 serves as a “soft reboot” of the series as DC consolidates its projects into a cohesive and canon Universe. It remains focused on Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, as played by John Cena. The season will consist of 8 episodes, streaming exclusively on Max.

Waller

Viola Davis returns as the morally corrupt, eponymous handler of super-villains like the Suicide Squad. Steve Agee also reprises his role as John Economos. No other details are currently available, though many speculate this will tie in heavily with Peacemaker season 2.

The Authority

Speaking of morally complex … check out The Authority! This team will do whatever it takes to ensure justice is served. They just won’t tell us the release date, though.

Watchmen Chapter II

Lauded as a great match to the source material, the Watchmen animated series will conclude in 2025 (exact date unknown) with its second and final season.

Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires

Streaming exclusively to Max, this animated story dives deep into the history of the Aztec Empire … with a comic book twist. In the movie, Yohualli Coatl fights the Spanish Conquistadors who murdered his parents. There is no release day or year at this time.

Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League 

Batman Ninja (2018) catapults Bruce Wayne back in time to fight his Rogues Gallery in feudal Japan. In this new animated action flick, Bruce travels forward in order to fight a twisted and tyrannical version of the Justice League. Watch the Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League to get a sneak peek at all the awesome combat.

The Brave and the Bold

It’s already confirmed that The Brave and the Bold will be part of “Gods and Monsters.” Directed by Andy Muschietti (IT), the live-action movie centers on Batman and his son, Damian Wayne AKA Robin. Let’s go, Bat-Family!

Teen Titans

There’s been lots of animated Teen Titans over the years, but the kids get their live-action big screen debut in this untitled movie.

Booster Gold

The DCU boosts its comedy potential with this one! Booster Gold will center on Mike Carter, described as a total loser, who builds rudimentary time travel tech to go back to our present and playact at super-heroing to feel better about himself.

Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost is set on the island of Themyscira before Diana Prince/Wonder Woman’s birth. Little else has been revealed at this time, besides the creators hinting at the political intrigue and a Game of Thrones-esque quality.

Lanterns

An Earth-based crime story a la True Detective, Lanterns is a gritty 8-episode Max series which stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The show’s mystery reportedly plays an integral role in setting up the DCU in its entirety.

Swamp Thing

Described as a dark horror film, Swamp Thing will introduce the troubled hero. It takes inspiration from Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing comics. Swamp Thing also concludes the “Gods and Monsters” chapter of the DCU.
