The S in Superman Stands for Hope

Among the myriad origin stories in comic books, Superman’s is one of the most well-known. His heroics are forged in tragedy and based on science so what’s not to enjoy? There’s heart, there’s drama, and there’s a built-in power structure for his strengths and weaknesses. The stories basically write themselves! Let’s start with that iconic super hero suit.

In most iterations, Superman’s suit is made from the blanket he was wrapped in as his parents sent him hurtling through space to Earth. Their own planet, Krypton, was at the brink of utter annihilation. To save their only son, Kal-El, they made the ultimate parental sacrifice. Fortunately, as his parents knew, Earth was an excellent destination for a Kryptonian. Because of our solar system’s yellow sun, Superman can absorb solar radiation and use all his signature superpowers. And right in the center of his blue and red suit, tinged with shining yellow just like the sun, is a giant S. That S is actually his family’s crest, a symbol that represents hope for all who see it. This enduring interpretation of the suit’s centerpiece was first introduced in Superman: The Movie, starring Christopher Reeve in 1978.

Superman’s Motto: “Truth, Justice, and…”

Over the years, Superman’s motto has also evolved. In his beginnings, he was seen as an archetypal figure of American ideals, namely truth and justice. That’s why his motto was “Truth, Justice, and the American Way.” This oft-quoted motto first popped up in a radio serial in the 1940s, a reminder of where the country was at back then. As the decades passed, this motto underwent slight variations until Jim Lee, DC’s Chief Creative Officer, updated Superman’s motto in 2021 to “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow.” It reflects Superman’s now universal appeal while also staying true to his beginning. He really is the Man of Tomorrow.

Who Created Superman?

Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, debuting in Action Comics #1 in April 1938. As the product of two Lithuanian Jewish immigrants, Superman represents the outsider at his very core. Which is a bit surprising when you take into account his heroic persona — absolute confidence and inherent power tempered by iron-clad morals. But mild-mannered Clark Kent often struggles to fit in and, as a literal alien on a foreign planet, Kal-El often feels lonely in his unique existence. That’s a lot of weight to carry on just one person’s shoulders, super hero or not.

This duality in nature is part of the equation for Superman’s popularity. We all have multiple sides to ourselves, some we let the world see and others we don’t. While most Superman fans probably aren’t hiding a super hero secret identity, it’s still a relatable experience. The world isn’t always ready to accept every part of us — but in time, those hidden parts always find a way to shine through to the surface.

Why Do We Love Superman So Much?

Our love of Superman is more than just a fascination with someone who is the best of the best, invulnerable and impressive in all the right ways. It’s about seeing the best of ourselves reflected in a hero worthy of admiration — and learning from what happens when that hero fails.

As much as Superman fans enjoy seeing him accomplish feats of amazing skill and strength, they also devour every story about his failures. He can’t win all the time otherwise that would be too predictable. But in his failures, and his resolve to power through them, we recognize our own humanity. Every reader or viewer of Superman knows that he stands for hope but what is that hope for? It’s the promise that we can all be better. Superman always believes in humanity’s potential for good and if we live up to even half his expectations of us, then we’re off to a good start.
