Who Are The Main Killers of Dead by Daylight?
Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical horror game where one savage Killer faces off against four desperate Survivors. The game lore has developed extensively and many more Killers have been added since its origin, including famous icons of the horror genre.
But who exactly were the original three killers introduced in Dead by Daylight? And what are their spine-chilling stories?
The Realm of the Entity
Before examining the Killers in Dead By Daylight, first we must peer into the terrifying abyss that is the Fog. The realm of the Entity is a realm of suffering, but also one of hope.
The Entity is a malevolent force that creates the warped reality of Dead By Daylight. It is drawn to places of deep cruelty, choosing hate-filled Killers to be its champions. It also steals away resilient Survivors, pitting them against the Killers in an endless cycle of fear, hope, sacrifice, and escape.
The Killers must sacrifice Survivors to the Entity to appease it, but the perpetual glimmer of hope that the Survivors can outwit the Killers long enough to escape to safety also sustains this strange, mighty being. The Entity thrives on an eternal game of cat and mouse, and is displeased when it is not fed.
Each of the original three Killers was chosen by the Entity to serve it with devotion, living out their murderous fantasies with even greater supernatural power as they stalk through the dark realm.
The Wraith
“There’s another apparition, more terrifying than anything I’ve ever seen, hunting amongst the shadows here. It moves like a silhouette, appearing and disappearing at the sound of a dreaded bell. It’s impossible to track it. Often convinced I have my back covered, it has promptly materialized right behind me to strike from close range. Stay still and watch the fog. Don’t move, don’t blink and for god’s sake don’t breathe… sometimes it is possible to see its shimmer as it glides forward if caught at just the right light.”
Before he became The Wraith, Philip Ojomo was a hardworking man who had a simple life working in a scrap yard, the Autohaven Wreckers. In addition to being a mechanic, he was in charge of the crusher. Cars came in, and little metal cubes came out. He stayed out of trouble and kept his axe to the grindstone – until one day he noticed blood running from an uncrushed car. Phillip discovered a young man, alive and gagged in the trunk of the vehicle.
His boss explained that the scrap yard was a front for more nefarious services. A good way to get rid of evidence for select clients. Hearing what he’d truly been doing all along drove Philip mad, and he threw his boss into the crusher. As it compressed, he pulled out his boss’ skull and spine, and then disappeared.
Within the Entity’s realm, the Wraith possesses the Wailing Bell. Once the bell tolls, the Wraith becomes invisible and stalks like a phantom towards his prey. By the time the Survivors hear the bell toll a second time, for the Wraith’s uncloaking, it’s far too late. One hit from his weapon, Azarov’s Skull, can be lethal to an unsuspecting victim.
The Trapper
“There is a vast monster of a man with a hideous grin torn across the mask that keeps stalking my every move. Similar to a hunter, he tracks us, priming devastating traps amongst the greenery. Extreme vigilance and a light step is essential in avoiding the blood-curdling clench of a bear trap… I have but many times managed to get caught in one of these traps… With the traps and the Trapper, it has so far been a constant battle between looking up and looking down.”
Evan MacMillan lived in the shadow and light of his wealthy and successful father. He did everything that his father Archie asked, exactly as requested. That meant that when he ran the MacMillan Estate, he was strict with the workforce. Evan protected his father from everyone that came after his fortune.
This also meant that when Archie MacMillan eventually went insane, Evan continued to do everything he said. He became The Trapper and trapped over one hundred men in the chambers and tunnels below the MacMillan Estate. The Trapper became the worst mass murder in modern history, known for his brutal strength and unnerving presence.
Now he serves the Entity with sadistic glee, that terrifying smile plastered across his monstrous mask in every trial. The Trapper uses a combination of bear traps and a brutal cleaver, perfect for capturing and carving up his victims. He is considered the primary mascot of Dead By Daylight, and while he is the introductory Killer that players enduring the tutorial must face, his methods remain consistently difficult for even experienced Survivors to withstand.
The Hillbilly
“A most terrible man to behold. His physique is all twisted and disfigured as of by some awful accident. He carries a deadly and cruel chainsaw which he wields with devastating violence, seemingly imbuing him with a superhuman speed for a while. His advantage is also a weakness as the loud noise can give away his position. So I have tried to heighten my sense of sound. Honing in on any sound that is not stemming from nature.”
Max Thompson Jr. was born a monstrosity that even his parents, Evelyn and Max Thompson Sr., were horribly afraid of. They were wealthy landowners, ashamed of their son’s barbaric visage. Instead of raising him on the family Coldwind Farm, they tortured him. Max Jr. was shut away from society, kept in isolation and fed through a small hole in the wall.
When Max Jr. finally escaped, he returned his family’s favor, massacring the parents that couldn’t be bothered to raise him. He continued to live on the farm for many years, but eventually, he left and slaughtered everything he could find. No one in town knows what happened to The Hillbilly, but some days, they say you can still hear his chainsaw echoing in the corn fields near the abandoned Thompson farmhouse.
The Hillbilly uses a cattle hammer to deal devastating blows to his opponents, but his signature weapon is a deadly Chainsaw. It can immediately put a Survivor into the dying state, leaving them bleeding on the ground and crawling towards impossible salvation. It also allows the Hillbilly to charge with incredible speed so long as he does not collide with any obstacles.
