Who Is the New Superman?

David Corenswet has been cast as Superman in DC Comics‘ upcoming film Superman: Legacy, the first official film in the rebooted DCU. Rachel Brosnahan will play the role of Lois Lane.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are building an entirely new DC universe. They’ve hinted at some of the upcoming projects, and confirmed quite a few things. What do we know? And what do we know about the new Superman? Without further ado, let’s find out.

Superman’s Legacy

Over the years, we’ve seen quite a few different depictions of Superman. Each one has been drastically different. For example, Christopher Reeve’s classic Superman offers a gentleness to the hero. Even his awkward Clark Kent is purely endearing! He is powerful enough to turn back time, defeat General Zod, and still make his deadlines at the Daily Planet.

Decades later, Zack Snyder’s Justice League gave us a unique version of Black Suit Superman. After a deadly battle with Doomsday, Clark comes back more violent and distant than ever before. This Superman is powerful enough to defeat Steppenwolf and he even becomes a member of the (slightly reluctant) Justice League. From silly to serious, and everything in between, Superman has taken on many forms. Finally, it’s time for his next iteration.

David Corenswet & Rachel Brosnahan

Superman and Lois Lane will be played by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, respectively. You might know Corenswet from his roles in The Politician and Hollywood. In The Politician, he played River Barkley, an outgoing and athletic candidate for class president. His charm stands out in every scene. Corenswet plays Jack Costello in Hollywood. In the show, Costello goes from active-duty soldier to silver screen actor. With his experience, he’s perfectly geared to play both Clark Kent and Superman.

Fans will recognize Rachel Brosnahan from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She played the titular character Miriam “Midge” Maisel. On the show, set in the 1950s, Midge pursues a career in the male-dominated world of comedy. All the while, she fights to balance her life, her love, and her family. Honestly, there couldn’t be a better actress to portray Lois Lane as she works to become an award-winning journalist, all while supporting others around her.

James Gunn has already confirmed that Superman: Legacy will not be an origin story. In fact, when he shared the news, he announced it with a picture of All-Star Superman. This specific version of Superman follows Clark after being poisoned by too much solar radiation.

At the very end of his life, Superman is more powerful and more capable than ever. He uses his abilities to make a long-lasting and positive impact on the Earth and on the people he loves. Of course, we don’t know for sure what story James Gunn will tell, but his image selection hints he could be using elements from All-Star Superman.
