Who’s Returning for the New Scott Pilgrim Series?

By Sideshow on Nov 9, 2023

In 2010, a film adaptation of the popular graphic novel Scott Pilgrim vs. The World rocked its way into theaters. Immediately, this film gained a huge cult following. Maybe it was the stylized edits and video game references, or maybe it was the story itself. But without a doubt, this film was sensational because of the casting.

Now, for the anime adaptation, Netflix has brought back nearly the entire cast from the film. So who exactly is returning? And where else would you know them from? Let’s find out.

Michael Cera

First and foremost, Michael Cera plays Scott Pilgrim, the titular character in this adventure. He’s the 23-year-old bassist for a band called Sex Bob-Omb and also kind of a dork. Worst of all, after his breakup with Envy Adams, he’s hopelessly in love with Ramona Flowers. And if he wants to date her, he’ll have to defeat her seven evil exes.

Cera is most well-known known for his roles as Evan in Superbad, Paulie Bleeker in Juno, and George-Michael Bluth in Arrested Development. His other geeky roles include an episode of The Boys Presents: Diabolical as well as voicing Robin in The Lego Batman Movie. He’s also recently appeared in the film Barbie as Allan.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the role of Ramona Flowers. She’s originally from New York, but now, she’s joined the rest of our characters in Toronto, Canada. Strangest of all, it appears that she’s capable of traveling through odd portals and unique dimensions. She’s got seven evil exes, and each one is more dangerous than the last.

Winstead played Michelle in 10 Cloverfield Lane. She was also Helena Bertinelli, AKA Huntress, in DC’s Birds of Prey. Most recently, she played the live-action Hera Syndulla™ in Star Wars: Ahsoka.

Satya Bhabha

Next, Satya Bhabha is set to return as Matthew Patel. Patel is is Ramona’s first evil ex. His mystical powers allow him to fly and even throw giant fireballs!

Bhabha is known for playing Habib in Sense8. He also played John Smee in The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy. And he’s even served as a director for a few episodes of the series Gossip Girl.

Kieran Culkin

Kieran Culkin plays Wallace Wells. Wells is Scott Pilgrim’s roommate. He’s the the person who trains Scott Pilgrim for all of his fights — an important role for a fighter as busy as Scott.

Culkin played the role of Roman Roy in the series Succession. He also played Rye Gerhardt in the Fargo series. And, if you hadn’t already recognized his last name, he played Fuller alongside his brother Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone.

Chris Evans

Yes, that Chris Evans plays Lucas Lee. Who is Lucas Lee? Well, he’s Ramona’s second evil ex. More than that, he’s a famous movie star and skateboarder.

Naturally, most fans will recognize Chris Evans as Captain America from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Truly, he’s made quite a mark on the world. In fact, the first Captain America film premiered only one year after his role in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Of course, fans would also recognize him as The Human Torch from 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four franchise.

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick plays Stacey Pilgrim. Stacey is Scott’s younger sister. Despite being younger, she’s significantly more mature than Scott. She does her best to be supportive, but it’s hard when Scott’s roommate Wallace Wells tends to steal all of her boyfriends.

Anna Kendrick has been a part of geek culture for quite some time, and she’s also been featured in many music-oriented projects. Sure, she was Jessica in the Twilight series. However, her most famous role is arguably Beca from Pitch Perfect. She’s continued to bring music to our lives as the voice of Poppy in the animated Trolls film series.

Brie Larson

Brie Larson is Envy Adams. And seriously, Envy is one of the coolest characters in the entire story. Back in college, she and Scott were in a relationship. But after breaking up with him, she became the famous lead singer of the band called The Clash At Demonhead. And now, she’s dating Todd Ingram. More on him later.

Larson is no stranger to adaptations. She played the role of Jeanette in a film adaptation of The Glass Castle. But more than that, she’s not a stranger to comic book adaptations. After all, she is the one and only Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After her 2019 solo film and her appearance in Avengers: Endgame, Larson stars in The Marvels alongside Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan.

Alison Pill

Alison Pill is Kim Pine. She was Scott’s first girlfriend. He was definitely a bad boyfriend. Still, she sticks around to play in the band. She’s the drummer for Sex Bob-omb, and she’s the best.

Pill has been acting since she was 12, and has a long list of credits. She plays Dr. Agnes Jurati in Star Trek: Picard. She is also Maggie Jordan in The Newsroom and she played Eva Glatt in the film Goon.

Aubrey Plaza

Julie Powers, played by Aubrey Plaza, is friends with nearly everyone in Scott Pilgrim’s life. She’s friends with Stacey Pilgrim, Envy Adams, and Ramona Flowers. Most importantly, she doesn’t like Scott Pilgrim. And that makes sense.

Aubrey Plaza is perhaps most well-known for her role as April Ludgate in the series Parks and Recreation. She also played Lenny Busker in the Marvel series Legion. However, her most exciting role is a mystery. She’ll be joining Kathryn Hahn in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Marvel’s WandaVision spinoff.

Brandon Routh

Brandon Routh is Todd Ingram. He’s the bassist for Envy’s band The Clash at Demonhead. Todd is also Ramona’s third evil ex. And most notably, he’s a vegan, which gives him extraordinary vegan-based superpowers.

Brandon Routh has always been super. No doubt, you’d recognize him as Clark Kent himself in Superman Returns. He’s also Ray Palmer, AKA The Atom, in The CW’s Arrowverse — appearing in Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.  Clearly, he’ll keep being super in this upcoming series.

Jason Schwartzman

Jason Schwartzman is Gideon Graves. He’s the main antagonist of the entire series. And yes, he’s got a sinister plan to use Ramona Flowers’ powers for his own personal gain. However, Scott Pilgrim will have to defeat him, because he’s Ramona’s seventh evil ex.

Most likely, you’d recognize Schwartzman for his roles in a number of Wes Anderson films. He’s Max Fischer in Rushmore, Jack in the Darjeeling Limited, Cousin Ben in Moonrise Kingdom, and Augie Steenbeck in Asteroid City. However, fans would certainly recognize his voice as Jesper in Klaus and, most recently, as the villain Spot in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Johnny Simmons

Johnny Simmons is Young Neil. Young Neil is Sex Bob-omb’s biggest fan in the world. He’s absolutely obsessed with them. Eventually, in the comics, he replaces Scott Pilgrim in the band!

Simmons was Brad in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Jack London in the TV mini series Klondike, and Chip Dove in the iconic horror film Jennifer’s Body.

Mark Webber

Mark Webber is Stephen Stills. He’s the lead singer and guitarist of Scott Pilgrim’s band Sex Bob-Omb. In fact, he’s basically the main talent in the whole band. That makes Scott pretty hard to work with, because he’s always distracted by girls instead of music!

Webber was Hal Brandston in Snow Day, Aaron McKinney in The Laramie Project, and Sean in the film Weapons.

Mae Whitman

Mae Whitman is Roxie Richter. Roxie is Ramona’s fourth evil ex. And yes, she’s got extraordinary ninja abilities. In fact, she taught Ramona many of her abilities.

Whitman has done an extraordinary amount of voice work through the years. Perhaps her most well-known voice is the character of Katara in the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. She’s also voiced Disney’s Tinker Bell across multiple properties. In live action, she appeared as Ann Veal in the series Arrested Development right alongside Michael Cera.

Ellen Wong

Ellen Wong plays Knives Chau. Knives is a self-described “Scott-aholic.” She’s definitely too young for Scott, and everyone makes sure to let Scott know. In time, she finds her own path, which ends up being much better without Scott.

Wong played Jenny Chey in the series GLOW. She also played the character Misaki Han-Shireikan in the show Dark Matter, and Jill “Mouse” Chen in The Carrie Diaries.

Anamanaguchi

Finally, we have the band Anamanaguchi. They weren’t a part of the original film. However, they did create the music for the video game adaptation of the graphic novel. And now, they’re back to play the music for this series! Since the series has yet to debut, it’s unclear whether they’re playing the video game music again, or if they’ve created a whole new sound track. But you can be sure it’s gonna rock!
