Stop in at Chalmun’s: Who’s Who in the Mos Eisley Cantina?

Looking for a freighter pilot? Thirsty for some blue bantha milk? Maybe you just like sitting in dark corners with other weirdos. No matter the reason, it’s always a good time at Chalmun’s Spaceport Cantina, better known as the Mos Eisley Cantina from Star Wars: A New Hope™. Of course, scattered among the pilots and jovial locals, you’ll also find some seriously sinister characters.

But that’s half the fun! A little evil intrigue keeps our favorite heroes guessing. Without all the shady criminals and double-crossing smugglers, things would be pretty dull. That’s why we’re spotlighting these irksome individuals with Sideshow’s Scum & Villainy sixth scale collection. Star Wars™ fans know that of all the watering holes in the galaxy, few are more seedy than the Mos Eisley Cantina. Well, except maybe Jabba the Hutt’s palace.

Who Sings the Star Wars Cantina Song?

As soon as you enter Chalmun’s, the first thing you’ll hear above the chitter chatter of multiple alien languages is Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes. This band of Bith musicians is responsible for one of the catchiest bar tunes in any star system. The notes from their jaunty instruments ripple through the air, cutting through conversations and covert exchanges.

Which Aliens Are in the Mos Eisley Cantina?

All throughout the cantina scene, we glimpse over 30 different types of aliens. First up, Hem Dazon’s head pops onto the screen. Behind this Arcona scout, we see Arleil Schous (a werewolf-looking Defel), Pons Limbic (a Sinisteen who’s good with numbers), Braconnor Bakiska (a sneaky Stennes Shifter), and Bom Vimdin (an Advozse from Riflor). Next, the unique-looking Muftak, a Talz with four eyes and white fur plus a proboscis, sits at a table.

As the camera continues to pan across the cantina, an alien pair (one Gotal and one H’nemthe) canoodle with each other. A reptilian Sarkan named Melas appears with a pipe in hand.

Over at the bar, the bat-like Kabe gets herself a drink. The devious Labria, a Devaronian also known as Kardue’sai’Malloc, smirks at someone offscreen.

As a fight breaks out at the bar, we also see an Ithorian named Momaw Nadan and a pair of Duros aliens. Cad Bane, the notorious bounty hunter, is also a Duros. Among the rest of the crowd, there are also Jawas, Saurins, an Abyssin, a Morseerian, a Brizzit, a number of humans, and others hiding in the shadows.

Scuffle at the Bar

For Luke Skywalker, the lively atmosphere of the cantina is a bit much. Especially when Ponda Baba, a burly Aqualish, pirate and his deranged companion Dr. Cornelius Evazan, attempt to bully the moisture farmer. Fortunately, Obi-Wan Kenobi and his lightsaber are close by and willing to lend a hand. Ponda’s hand, that is.

Settling a Cantina Dispute

Seeing as how the cantina is a meeting ground for the criminal underworld, it makes sense Jabba the Hutt would send his lackeys here. Greedo the Rodian confronts Han Solo. He demands that Han pay up what he owes Jabba or else there will be consequences. These two seem to have a previous rivalry as smugglers. Soon, this dispute resolves itself with a blink-and-you-miss-it blaster shot.

So who shot first? The more important answer, it seems, is who aimed better. And we all know it’s Han who walks away unscathed.

In a place like the Mos Eisley Cantina, with its shady corners and shadier characters, there’s always someone else lurking around, waiting for their moment. Like Garindan, the Kubaz spy who told stormtroopers where the Millennium Falcon was parked.
