Who Is Wonder Man? Comics + MCU TV Series Explained

Many Avengers lead full lives outside of their super hero antics. Famously, Iron Man is tech billionaire Tony Stark and She-Hulk works as a lawyer when she’s Jennifer Walters.

Likewise, Black Panther is also T’Challa, the King of Wakanda, and Moon Knight is … well, let’s just say Marc Spector has a very busy social life. But did you know there’s a movie star Avenger? And we’re not referring to the MCU — just yet.

Ahead of the January 27, 2026 premiere of Marvel’s live-action Wonder Man TV series, here’s a look at Simon Williams’ star-studded career as both an Avenger and an actor, as well as his complicated connections to three other fan-favorite Marvel heroes.

Double Agent Turned Movie Star

Created in 1964 by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck, Simon Williams was actually an early part of Avengers history. He made his first appearance in The Avengers #9 as a double agent, sent by Baron Zemo and Amora the Enchantress to infiltrate the team.

Before that, Simon and his younger brother Eric were the heirs to a prominent munitions company, the rival to Stark Industries. Due to some embezzling, Simon wound up in jail and Zemo offered to bail him out. The only catch? He wanted Simon to become an ion-powered spy to take down the Avengers. After undergoing risky experimentation, Simon gained super strength, durability, flight, and invulnerability, among other fluctuating energy-based abilities. Wonder Man was born.

A Hero in Hollywood

Throughout his super hero tenure, Simon Williams has had a rocky relationship with the Avengers. He’s not afraid to question a leader’s authority, whether it’s Iron Man or Hawkeye. And when the Avengers disbanded, Simon even took charge of his own livelihood and embarked on an acting career. At first, he was not successful at all. However, he eventually found roles as a leading man, even starring in a television show based on The Thing from the Fantastic Four.

Wonder Man’s Friends, Enemies, and Lovers

Especially amid the chaos of being a super hero, you need a buddy who’s always got your back. For Simon Williams, that’s Hank McCoy AKA Beast. This furry blue genius was first a member of the X-Men but he gradually also became an Avengers staple, where here and Simon quickly bonded. Perhaps they’re an unlikely duo but their friendship has endured quite a lot.

Of all Wonder Man’s roles, his most famous one is the brainwave template for Vision. After his ionic ray-based powers caused Simon Williams to (seemingly) die, Hank Pym raced to preserve Simon via his brain patterns. Then, Ultron stole those patterns and put them into his android creation, Vision. This tricky connection created a deep bitterness within Simon’s younger brother Eric. In his grief over losing his brother, Eric became Grim Reaper and would antagonize the Avengers for years, struggling to reconcile his brother’s multiple new forms.

Love for Scarlet Witch

To make matters even more messy, Simon developed feelings for Wanda Maximoff, AKA Scarlet Witch. Though Simon and Vision shared similarities, right down to neural pathways, Wanda didn’t feel the same. This complicated love triangle espoused lots of hard feelings between Simon, Wanda, and Vision — especially when Simon refused to help restore Vision’s temporarily wiped mind. Ouch!

Wonder Man Moves into the MCU

Over the years, Simon helped found the West Coast Avengers and joined other teams like the Revengers as well. Due to the unstable nature of his ionic body, Simon has shifted between a “normal” human body and a purely ionized energy form. This harsh ionization has helped him resist symbiote possession and mind control. His friendship with Beast also recently brought him to the mutant nation of Krakoa, where he helped thwart Hank’s despicable villainy. It’s also interesting to note that Simon considers himself to be a pacifist.

In the MCU, Simon Williams will be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, joined by Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery and Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams. The TV series, created by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) and Andrew Guest, will take the meta route, in which Simon lands a super hero role in a world where audiences have “super hero fatigue.” Given Wonder Man’s meaningful connections to so many influential Avengers, it’ll be interesting to see how his role in the MCU plays out.
