Ah, mutant love. Such a sweet, dangerous, volatile thing that often ends in petty drama and broken hearts. If there’s one thing the X-Men know better than oppression, it’s drama. And when it comes to messy romances, Marvel Comics would be nowhere without our merry band of mutants.

As wedding season approaches, it’s time to consider the most important X-Men romances that culminated in a wedding ceremony. Over the years, some weddings have been wartime strategy, like Emma Frost and Iron Man. Others are just as much a mission of diplomacy as true love, as we see with Professor X and Empress Lilandra. But in honor of the crime-ridden antics of X-Men: The Wedding Special #1 (2024), here are the top 5 X-Men weddings. We’re not crying, you are.

Rogue & Gambit Wedding
X-Men: Gold #30 (2018)

We’re starting off strong with the long-awaited, certainly-not-without-its-roadblocks wedding of Rogue and Gambit. For years, this duo of sugah and spice had shared a tantalizing will-they-or-won’t-they vibe. This simmering romance was partially fueled by Gambit’s charming, ladykilling ways. But the big factor keeping them apart was always Rogue’s mutation, which causes physical touch to be a lethal affair.

At the core of it all, Rogue and Gambit care deeply for each other. Both share the guilt of difficult and shady pasts. Each is part of the X-Men family but also often at odds with their sense of belonging. They’ve had their rough patches thanks to Mr. Sinister and even Mystique, but when Kitty left Colossus at the altar, they took advantage of the wedding and got married themselves! Since then, their love has continued to charge with endless passion.

Northstar & Kyle Wedding
Astonishing X-Men #51 (2012)

Okay so Kyle isn’t a mutant. In fact, some X-fans might even say it’s hard to pinpoint what exactly he does, beyond occasional marketing for Krakoa’s public relations and a brunch here and there. But the wedding between Northstar and Kyle Jinadu certainly made history as Marvel’s first gay wedding.

Back in the early to mid 2000s, we didn’t have the beautifully queer politics of Krakoa. So the union of Jean-Paul Beaubier, the hot-headed member of Canada’s Alpha Flight, with a sweet human named Kyle was pretty groundbreaking. Despite various instances of mind control at the time of their ceremony, these two men managed to find happiness with each other. Since their marriage, Northstar and Kyle have set an example of how to uphold a stable relationship in a world full of super-villains and universe-ending catastrophes. Jean-Paul is even more level-headed now … for the most part! Now that’s couple goals.

Mystique & Destiny Wedding
X-Men: The Wedding Special #1 (2024)

Of all the most famous mutants and their long-winded loves, Mystique and Destiny take the cake on longevity. These two are known throughout the Marvel universe as mutant terrorists, treacherous double-crossers, and all-around villains — except when it comes to their love for each other and their family. Mystique and Destiny’s love was included as subtext due to the Comics Code Authority when they first appeared as leaders of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Then, Destiny died at the hands of Professor X’s son, Legion. Ever since then, Mystique has been on a mission to honor her wife’s dying wishes and uphold the prophecies from her precognitive diaries — at any cost.

Did we mention that these two fell in love centuries ago? Their love literally spans the ages and it has never faltered. Even in death, they both find ways to make each other laugh and cry. Recently, the true story of Nightcrawler’s birth was revealed in X-Men Blue: Origins (2023). With memories restored and family reunited, Mystique and Destiny decided to renew their wedding vows. Each story in this wedding special issue offers a different insight into their touching history and the ending is a twist you might not see coming but makes perfect sense for these powerful women in love.

Storm & Black Panther Wedding
Black Panther #18 (2006)

Name a more influential, all-encompassing power couple. We’ll wait. The matrimonial team-up between Storm and Black Panther is legendary, not only in bringing together two of Marvel’s most famous super hero teams, but also in its longterm effects on the characters as well as their storylines. Though their super hero adventures as adults are the most well-known parts of their histories, Ororo Munroe and T’Challa actually met as children. Ororo saved T’Challa from a South African mercenary and since then, they have always shared a special kinship. Besides, both are eternally connected to their African homelands, another tie that binds these two together. And Storm’s wedding dress, in typical Storm fashion, was absolutely showstopping.

Unfortunately, their high-profile marriage did not last. Wakandans fully embraced Storm as both their queen and a weather goddess, but she and T’Challa found it hard to agree on many issues. Their marriage ultimately broke apart when Storm sided with her fellow mutants over him. They have since reconciled with each other and it’s certain there will always be a deep connection between these two beloved super heroes.

Cyclops & Jean Grey Wedding
X-Men #30 (1994)

When it comes to X-Men couples, Cyclops and Jean Grey are the original teammates to lovers situation. Throughout the decades, their love has blossomed from teenage crushes to sweeping intergalactic romance. What other couple could survive multiple deaths, countless mental breakdowns, and even a torrid telepathic affair?

While it’s true Scott and Jean have shared romances with other people — Wolverine, Emma Frost, Madelyne Pryor, to name a few — through it all, Jean and Scott always find their way back to each other. No matter what, they are the backbone of the X-Men, two blazing red constants that will always uplift their teammates and act as moral compasses when everything goes awry (which is often). At the end of the day, these two mutants balance each other out. While their love has its ups and downs, they always support each other. Jean Grey and Scott Summers approach each other with mutual positive regard, an admirable quality in any relationship. Just, uh, don’t suggest any space travel for their honeymoon plans.
