In a galaxy far, far away, the greatest asset isn’t a lightsaber, a blaster, or even the Force. It’s love. Whether romantic or platonic, love creates the most enduring connections across the Star Wars™ universe. And as the saying goes, some people — or beings or wookiees™ or droids™ — are simply meant to be.
From the movies to animated series and beyond, let’s take a look at the friendships, partnerships, and relationships in Star Wars that will always warm our hearts.
Han Solo™ and Chewbacca™
Han Solo and his trusty co-pilot Chewbacca are probably the best example of Star Wars BFFs. These longtime pals fly the Millennium Falcon™ together. They make it through the Kessel Run™ together. They also become heroes of the Rebellion together, inspiring altruism and bravery inside one another when nearly everyone else in the galaxy has already labeled them money-motivated two-timers.
As shown in Solo: A Star Wars™ story, Han and Chewie meet while imprisoned on the planet Mimban™. Han’s attempt to combat the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate backfires, which gets him thrown in a pit with a “beast.” After a scuffle, Han and Chewie converse in Shyriiwook™ and decide to escape together. This moment forms the powerful friendship we see on display in every Star Wars movie.
Kanan Jarrus™ and Hera Syndulla™
Captain Hera Syndulla and Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus are the glue that holds their found family — a ragtag yet overwhelmingly successful rebel cell — together. They are selfless, fearless, gentle, and kind. In Star Wars: Rebels™, these two bring out the best in each other; Kanan reminds Hera that life isn’t all about war, and Hera encourages Kanan to trust himself and the people around him.
Without Hera and Kanan to lead the Ghost Crew and Phoenix Squadron, the Rebellion as we know it wouldn’t exist. The decisions, sacrifices, and moves they made in order to save and help each other had lasting impacts on the fate of the galaxy. They are the power couple — and hopefully one day we’ll see if their son, Jacen Syndulla™, has honored his parents’ legacy.
Din Djarin™ and Grogu™
Our precious Clan of Two has stolen the hearts of Star Wars fans everywhere. The Mandalorian’s™ paternal love for The Child — later known as Grogu — has helped them succeed against all odds. As the surrogate father of this little green asset, Din Djarin finds his softest side. He becomes protector, guardian, and parent. Grogu holds similar love for the Mandalorian who carries him through the galaxy on a bauble-filled Razor Crest™.
In The Mandalorian™ season 2 finale, Din Djarin relinquishes his hold on Grogu to reunite him with his own kind, the Jedi. This technically ends his commitment to his ward, but Din Djarin clearly cares more about Grogu than that. The Mandalorian isn’t simply a vehicle for The Child to go from Imperial prisoner to Jedi apprentice — he’s by all accounts his dad. It’s no wonder we all shed tears when these characters said farewell.
Luke Skywalker™ and Leia Organa™
Of course the space twins are part of this list! Separated at birth but drawn together through fate and the Force, Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa are the most beloved Star Wars siblings. They are first introduced in the original trilogy, which includes A New Hope™, The Empire Strikes Back™, and Return of the Jedi™. Their characters are then present in every following piece of the Skywalker Saga™.
Separately, Luke and Leia are both bright young adults with altruistic ambitions. Combined, they make the most heroic duo in the galaxy. They lead a Rebellion, defeat evil, and usher in a new age of peace and prosperity. Both Force-sensitive, they carry on a long-lost tradition and ensure that the next generation of Jedi utilize the core values of both the old religion and the modern concept that is strengthened by love and attachments.
Ahsoka Tano™ and Anakin Skywalker™
Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano are more than a Master and Padawan. Attached by more than military duty, Ahsoka and Anakin find in each other the type of family of which the Clone Wars so cruelly deprives them. Ahsoka considers Anakin her older brother. Anakin, happily accepting this role in her life, calls her Snips and gives her all the guidance and tough love expected of him. When she leaves the Jedi Order, he’s heartbroken.
Most importantly, Ahsoka never loses faith in her Master. At first she can’t believe that he’s become the monstrous villain Darth Vader™, but once she’s accepted this, she vows not to leave him to his dark fate. Their battle on Malachor™ is one of the best lightsaber duels in Star Wars history for a reason.
C-3PO™ and R2-D2™
The bickering droids C-3PO and R2-D2 are guaranteed to always make us smile. Although they fight and criticize each other constantly, they make the greatest of companions. They have spent most of their existence affectionately getting on each other’s nerves. Even though C-3PO insists R2-D2 is useless, he still argues that Luke Skywalker should purchase him from the Jawas™. And even though R2-D2 beeps rather aggressively at C-3PO, he never really leaves him behind.
Their squabbles are also legendary. Providing a welcome dose of humor and heart, C-3PO and R2-D2 are inseparable from both each other and our heroes — the former because they can never stop arguing, and the latter because they’re always helping. And really, where would our heroes even be without them?
Rey™ and Kylo Ren™
Rey and Kylo Ren — also known as Ben Solo™ — are one of the most fascinating pairs because of the successful realization of the “enemies to lovers” trope in the sci-fi franchise. They are the most explosive dynamic of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, which encompasses The Force Awakens™, The Last Jedi™, and The Rise of Skywalker™. Although Rey and Kylo have a fraught relationship full of mistrust and uncertainty in the first two films, they always feel drawn together — and finally, in The Rise of Skywalker, we learn why.
As revealed by Darth Sidious™, Rey and Ben Solo are a Force dyad. This Force-bond pairs two Force-wielders across space and time, connecting them in such a way that they become one with each other and the Force — essentially, life itself. They are bound by fate, even when they think they hate each other. In the last sequel film, they each use their shared power to bring one another back from certain death, making them a tragic yet ultimately perfect pair.
Boba Fett™ and Fennec Shand™
An unlikely yet extremely awesome duo, bounty hunters Fennec Shand and Boba Fett have a relationship built on mutual respect. Boba Fett saves Fennec Shand’s life in The Mandalorian™, and that decision binds her to him in a debt of gratitude. But Fennec Shand and Boba Fett act as equals, protecting and fighting alongside each other to achieve their shared goals.
In The Book of Boba Fett™, Fennec Shand will act as Boba Fett’s right-hand woman in the bid to take over the remnants of Jabba the Hutt’s™ crime syndicate and territory on Tatooine™. They could be ruthless or fair, violent or merciful — we just don’t know how these skilled mercenaries will accomplish these major feats. What we do know is that they’ll accomplish them together.
