The Best Qui-Gon Jinn Quotes in Star Wars The Phantom Menace
Originally published October 18, 2022. This article covers the best Qui-Gon Jinn quotes from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
Qui-Gon Jinn is one of the most beloved Jedi in Star Wars™. Clever, venerable, and a bit of a rule-breaker, Qui-Gon is the first character who hinted at the concept of a “Gray Jedi.” Thus he’s always been a hot topic of discussion and fan theories, and Star Wars fans always want to see more of him.
Thankfully, our wishes have been granted. After his death in Star Wars live action, Qui-Gon has appeared in both Rebels™ and Kenobi™ as a Force ghost. Then, we went back in time with Tales of the Jedi™, an animated anthology series exploring tales from earlier days in the Republic — with Qui-Gon featuring prominently alongside (former) Jedi Master Count Dooku.
In honor of his intriguing ways, we’re celebrating Qui-Gon Jinn by breaking down 10 of his best quotes from his first appearance in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace™.
“Keep your concentration here and now, where it belongs.”
Before he is anything else, Qui-Gon Jinn is a Master. He must always instruct and guide his Apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi. In this moment he recommends Obi-Wan keep his thoughts on the present, rather than letting his anxieties about the future get the better of him. It’s great advice for both Obi-Wan and the audience.
“There’s always a bigger fish.”
This one is perhaps Qui-Gon Jinn’s most famous quote. Trapped in an underwater cave on Naboo and cornered by a large sea creature, he and his team are seemingly out of options. However, a new hero emerges from the depths. This bigger fish chomps down on the one holding Qui-Gon’s ship hostage, and then they make their escape.
“The queen doesn’t need to know.”
Here’s a great example of Qui-Gon using his instincts, rather than politics, to navigate his life. He wants to put his fate in Anakin Skywalker’s hands. PadmĂ© Amidala doesn’t think this is a good idea, and says the queen won’t approve. Qui-Gon shoots back that this can be their secret. Funnily enough, he’s completely unaware that PadmĂ© is the queen in disguise.
“Whenever you gamble, my friend, you’ll eventually lose.”
If you need life advice, go to Qui-Gon Jinn. He uses these words to “comfort” Watto after the mechanic loses big in their bet. But it’s a good reminder to anyone who does gamble. Prepare yourself to lose, and you’ll never be surprised when you do!
“Anakin Skywalker, meet Obi-Wan Kenobi.”
This is an extremely significant scene. From the original trilogy, we already know what a fateful relationship Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker share. Yet here’s a rushed introduction. It’s so mundane that it gives us chills, since we know what’s to come.
“Finding him was the will of the Force.”
Qui-Gon frequently disobeys the Jedi Order. Yet he is also one of the most devout Jedi. It is arguably true that he is so devout and connected to the Force because he doesn’t follow all the rules and regulations. This quote, when he argues with the Council to admit Anakin to the Order, shows how strong his faith is. It also shows his commitment to Anakin — someone who will unfortunately bring ruin to the very people Qui-Gon compels to offer kindness.
“Your focus determines your reality.”
This is a great quote for two reasons. First, it’s just an awesome lesson. Anakin is unsure about his place in the world, and Qui-Gon tells him to simply focus on himself and his path and he will forge his own way. Second, once again we see how craftily and flagrantly Qui-Gon disobeys the Order. Since he can’t outright teach him, he tells Anakin to simply watch and learn.
“You’re a much wiser man than I am. I foresee you will become a great Jedi.”
People have mixed feelings about Qui-Gon’s treatment of Obi-Wan in The Phantom Menace. But this moment is incredibly touching. Qui-Gon shows extreme humility even as the Master. He also speaks the truth, foretelling of Obi-Wan’s future as one of the most powerful Jedi in the Skywalker Saga.
“Promise me you will train the boy.”
Qui-Gon Jinn’s last request sets forth the fate of the entire saga. Having lost his battle with Darth Maul, Qui-Gon holds on until he can speak to his Apprentice one final time. He asks Obi-Wan to train Anakin, and a teary-eyed Obi-Wan agrees. He’s ready to carry out Qui-Gon’s will. Only we know how frightening a prospect this is.
“He’s the Chosen One. He will bring balance.”
Another hot topic of Star Wars debate is: Who is the Chosen One? Anakin Skywalker? Or is it his son, Luke Skywalker? Theories and opinions abound. But here, at least, is Qui-Gon’s certainty. He’s so sure that these are his dying words. It’s up to you whether you believe in them, but Obi-Wan absolutely does.
