Breaking Down the Book of Boba Fett™ Trailer

Unless you’ve been stuck in a Sarlacc pit™ in a sand dune far, far away, you’ve probably heard about the upcoming Star Wars™ series called The Book of Boba Fett™. Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen will soon be returning as Boba Fett™ and Fennec Shand™.

Now that the official trailer for the Disney+ series has been released, we finally have more information about why this dangerous duo occupied a certain throne room at the end of season 2 of The Mandalorian™.

When they were introduced in season 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian™, each character was instrumental in the Mandalorian’s development as an antihero. Will we see the same character growth for Fennec and Boba in this series? The Book of Boba will premiere on December 29, but until then let’s gather what we know and prepare for the galaxy’s most anticipated bounty.

The Fall of Jabba and the Rise of Boba

The Star Wars galaxy is full of illicit deals and seedy smugglers. Underneath the shimmering lights of Coruscant™ and even the idyllic lakes of Naboo™, each planet has its own network of shady figures. However, one of the most infamous planets with a criminal underbelly is Tatooine™. And for centuries, that planet’s underworld was ruled by a particularly notorious figure: Jabba the Hutt™.

As the trailer opens, we see the sinister silhouette of Jabba’s palace. Tucked away in the sand dunes of Tatooine, Jabba ruled with a slimy iron fist, and Bib Fortuna™ was always at his side as his majordomo. Jabba’s reign took its last breath at the hands of Princess Leia™, and about five years later Bib would be killed by Boba and Fennec, effectively making them the new lords of the former Hutt criminal empire. The trailer reveals that this transfer of power will encounter many hitches along the way yet Boba, surprisingly, does not wish to operate the same way that Jabba did — “Jabba ruled with fear. I intend to rule with respect.”

Potential Adversaries for Boba

In The Mandalorian, we were introduced to many new and familiar adversaries — the Child was rescued from Dark Troopers™ by Luke Skywalker™, krayt dragons™ terrorized a desert town, and otherwordly spiders and sea monsters posed dangerous threats. Tusken Raiders™ also became unlikely allies in “Chapter 9: The Marshal,” and the new trailer gives us a brief promise of the Sand People returning. Maybe there will even, finally, be an explanation for Boba’s mysterious escape from the Great Pit of Carkoon™.

But in the new trailer for The Book of Boba Fett, perhaps the most intriguing potential adversaries are the former captains of Jabba the Hutt. Naturally, they are reluctant to give up this opportunity to take Jabba’s place. Around a palace table occupied by Klatooinians™, Aqualish™, and Trandoshans™ (along with a brief shot of an important-looking Ithorian™), one Klatooinian even questions why they shouldn’t just kill Fennec and Boba. Fennec points out that this statement would have earned immediate death in Jabba’s court, presumably at the hands of a rancor™ or other terrifying monster. However, Boba gives a surprising response to the threat: “Please, speak freely.”

It would seem that Boba’s rise to power will be guided by an entirely new way of handling business. Earlier in the trailer, Boba says, “Why speak of conflict when cooperation can make us all rich?” Though this statement is guided by the greed of a bounty hunter, we’ll see whether he can follow through on this daunting ideal. After all, is there any respect to be cultivated in the galactic underworld?

Will Din Djarin™ appear in The Book of Boba Fett?

At the beginning of the trailer, we overhear a conversation between Boba Fett and Din Djarin™, in which Boba makes yet another eyebrow-raising statement: “I am not a bounty hunter.” We, like Din, have heard otherwise, so it remains to be seen what Boba really means here.

This interaction also introduces another burning question and that’s whether Din (or even Grogu™) will make an appearance in The Book of Boba Fett. Along with the Mandalorian, it’s possible other figures from Mandalore™ could make appearances, such as Bo-Katan Kryze™, especially considering the criminal and political unrest that this series will portray. Will the culture and power of Mandalore be ignited once again?
